Pulled the plugs, cranked it over, and it locked up. Tried jumping it and push starting it, no dice. Gonna scrounge u what cash I have and try to get it swapped on Thursday.

Not fun.

Must of been one hell of a puddle, looks like you're running a stock airbox setup?

Yup. No resonator chamber in the fender.

Anyway, action shots from Sunday's autocross.

May as well try turning it over by hand just for kicks. That would make me feel better before I put another motor in it. You already have a line on a good motor?

Yeah, and F23A1 for $100 or so, through a friend. Having him pull the pan and check the crank, etc before I pick it up. Checked out some part numbers, too, turns out the NIB water pump I have will work, so all I need to do is go to Honda and see if they'll exchange my NIB F22B2 timing belt for an F23A1 timing belt. Then I'll need to track down a manual VTEC ECU from a 96-97, and the plugs/wires for the VTEC solenoid and pressure switch. It's basically a pull the old engine, take off all the parts, slap it on the F23, wire VTEC, good to go. Since it needs a clutch, I'm going to do that at the same time. Rockauto sells an OEM-grade kit for under $100 for the H22, which has the same disc as the ITR, and a pressure plate with more clamping force than the F22's and it bolts right on. Totally forgot I had a set of NIB ARP flywheel bolts until this whole fiasco.

how in the world, with a OEM air box, did you get enough water in to the intake to hydra lock the engine ? …. deep puddle over the top of the hood ?

Not surprised with that rain storm we had; sorry to see that.

No idea. No resonator chamber in the bumper either. Water level was at about hub height when I had to push it into the lot. It was raining extremely heavily yesterday. Air filter is still soaking wet.

If the water was that high, it was enough to cover the airbox intake port behind the bumper. IIRC the intake and airbox system for those (if they were anything like the 92 Prelude I had) are behind the passenger side bumper cover. Once the air filter is soaked, the rest of the intake just acts like a giant straw and sucks the water in. Really sorry to hear, but at least it's a 90's Honda and engines are practically like legos (F-series anyway and some H-series).

wow … I alway worry about water hight when driving either my Integra (AEM V2) and my CRX (AEM V1) both of which draw air from the passenger side fender well

sad to hear about your engine … hope things work out for you

Needless to say, I'm probably going to try to redesign the intake setup from here out. Probably do a cone filter and trash can box.

One of the aftermarket setups with the drainpipe intake tube and the cone filter is actually the hot ticket for this, they put the filter in a location where water intrusion is much less of a problem, unless you like driving through lakes and streams. If you can find a way to beat the underhood heat they might actually be worth a couple (1 or 2) hp, hope you like intake noise though, they are LOUD.

It's usually the resonator boxes that are the culprit, because they draw air from behind the bumper cover and funnel it up to the fenderwell intake hole and into the airbox. Even if you delete them, if you run into some pretty deep water, like it sounds like beans did (up to the hubs is at least 10-12 inches with an average low profile 17" wheel/tire combo) you can still get water into the stock airbox. Not just a Honda issue, but most cars have their airbox on the driver side instead of passenger, and most puddles form away from the crown of the road. Here's the air cleaner assembly for a CRX to illustrate, CRX Air cleaner The long tube that leads to the resonator box basically lives behind the bumper cover.

$1500 car= liability only and $1000 deductable. I could probably rebuild the entire car for $1000 in junkyard parts.

it doesn't cost all that much to add comp. to your policy … don't know if comp would have covered this .. but one busted windshield and comp pays for itself … even on $1500 cars

if all you have is liability … what is the deductible for ?

Maybe I don't have a deductible. I just know my insurance rapes me monthly for a car that's really not worth it.

Insurance peoples, learn me.

Just added comprehensive to my insurance. $35 a month, whatever. I can deal with that. Is this claimable now? How should I go about this process? Take it to a shop and have them give me a quote? Call a shop and ask for a quote? Go to friend's performance shop and get a quote? Call insurance ASAP? Wait it out(it's supposed to rain this weekend, too)?

On the good news front, we're supposed to get a quarterly bonus this next paycheck, that's an extra $500 in my pocket. If insurance can't do anything for me, at least I won't be absolutely strapped trying to get this thing together.

wow … that's a lot for comp. especially if it's $1000 deductible

Well, the car's now at my roommate's dad's house. Waiting until after next Friday(payday) when both my roommate and I have off on the following Monday and Tuesday. The engine my buddy has sounds a bit sketch(poorly done head gasket, oil pressure issues) so I'm just gonna take the gable on a junkyard engine for $200. What sucks the most is I had a spare block at my old house and couldn't bring it with me to my new place because of time/space constraints. I thought about running by and seeing if the new owners didn't toss it. I'd be happy as a clam if they didnt, then I could just dig up a head if miner's junk and swap everything over.

It's only been about 4 months, and they're just on the other side of town. Another engine I've found in Sterling Heights I can get for about $300, known good and running. It's a little bit more expensive, but comes with ECU, Harness, mounts, the whole nine yards minus transmission.
