I have some air boat headers that would be great shooting out the fenders open.

Because I like sharing engine porn.

If I go Rat-Hearse with this as a winter project, it will want those. They fit a 425?

Since everyone else is throwing out bad ideas. I for one would love to see a hearse posted on 3s with Daytons on it.

Evidence suggest he had atleast 2. Now has atleast one.

Yes. There were two, now one. The one I sold came from a salvage auction, and turned out a lot better than I expected. I got a good two years out of it.

The interior is pretty much original-1977-worn, but mostly still functioning. The worst of it is the driver's door panel is completely gone.

I like that Subaru Baja idea. It's old enough not to be mistaken as a working hearse, but I still kinda want to get a little further away from that look.

That is awesome, I recognize that QuickTrip any chance of seeing the Hearse on the streets around there?

Actually I was on the way home and realized that the car still had the tag on it. I stopped there to meet the seller, who was in BA at the moment. (In Oklahoma tags used to stay with the car. Starting in July, the seller keeps them.) If you head east for a float trip on the Illinois, you might see the Hearse, Dung Beetle, or a Boxster.

My vote is for a lopey idle from that big block, exiting via sidepipes.  Wide wheels/tires are a must.  And with all that room in the back, I'm thinking make it a super comfortable party wagon.

Adding on to the Subaru Baja concept, what if the back was not a pickup bed but a hot tub?

That's awesome, I used to go over to float the Illinois and hang out in the 'Quah with some frequency but all my friends from that area have moved away over time.  Really cool projects, and my kind of madness!

I love it, I'd have made that trade too. Frankly, I hope you don't cut it. It's cool cause it's a Hearse. If you cut it down the silhouette will just look like a regular sedan, or at best a flower car. Keep the full back.

^^This.

Covered storage is a great thing until it's not.  When that happens, there are other options that don't involve amputation of the key element that makes the car what it is.  However, the idea of a roots blower sticking out of the hood is really appealing.

Yes... I talked about it with SWMBO and there will be no [major] cutting. It's a Hearse, it should stay Hearsey.

I still don't have a clear idea of direction, but it's great to get all the opinions. Right now, I'm going to drive it at least weekly and see what breaks or is already broken. Soon, I'll get some detailed pics of what it is. The Challenge Boxster needs to be my primary project for a while, but this car is going to be fun.

Off the top of my head, things I know I'm going to want:

  • Driver's side door panel and window regulator.
  • Left rear tail light plastic.
  • I just ordered more GRM stickers
  • Better seat upholstery (DIY? Replace seats?).
  • Replace missing trim (Chinesium stick-on "chrome" strips?).
  • Rehab all the door hardware - generally solid, but need a good clean and adjust.
  • Headlight dimmer floor switch.

Even though I've seen those Caddy's for, well, literally forever for me, the pic of it parked next to the Cayenne made me realize that the front end, it's just, soooooooo many rectangles!  Looks like an interesting project.  I would assume anyone I met daily'ing a hearse would be similarly interesting wink

Fixing 1977 automotive air conditioning is ...Outside my purview.

the AC hoses were CUT off the compressor at some point. It looks like everything is there, but not going back together. The interior is huge and only the front passenger window goes down. How can I keep this thing cool in the Oklahoma summer? I don't think that restoring the original AC is a viable option. A full aftermarket system is going to be $$$$$ and a lot of work to install.

What about an RV style roof AC unit? Maybe house it in a coffin style frame on a roof rack. If I wire in a second battery, can a regular alternator handle that kind of load while I drive? Should I just make a big cooler full of ice with a blower and duct?

What would GRM do?

I would ask around in the OKC area and see if anyone could make lines using your hard parts and fittings. I looked at adding AC for my 91 civic a few years ago and I did find a place in Houston that could do it.

I don't follow the point about the headlight dimmer floor switch.  Do you want one because you like them, or did a previous owner (or the original builder) install one?  I ask because up till now I thought the downsized 77+ B-bodies all had turn-signal high-beam switches, which I always presumed was for NVH reasons.

Glad you're not cutting it up. Although I will say a radical raked chop on the top and a blower out of the hood doesnt fall into that category.

An RV unit on the roof would cool it but I think power supply could be problematic. Plus you cant reach the controls while driving. I think I'd start with replacing the factory ac if you can, it's not that hard once you have the parts. If that doesnt cool enough to be usable I'd rig a temporary curtain behind the front seats for the summer. Maybe in a nice dark gray velvet.

Hopefully Dusterbd13-michael will chime in, he had some good insight in my thread when I was asking about old AC systems. When I try to get mine running, I will use a modern compressor and condenser.

Ill post a full setup idea later when im not running my butt s off.

Post a picture of the current bits and pieces of ac and ill let it roll around in my head and see what comes back out.

This E36 M3 ain't rocket surgery, but I can give you some suppliers and other ideas to make it functional with modern refrigerants for an inexpensive price
