I will soon weld my new engine braces into my Alfa Romeo spider  bodyshell. Question. I can weld top and sides, easy. But the underside well be a wee bit of a problem. Can I just weld just top and sides, or need to do all sides. Engine dressed weighs about 325 pounds.

I think I will just weld all 4 sides

Sounds like you made a decision. I'd weld as much as you can.  I'd the underside gets difficult to lay a bead, you can do a series of tacks next to each other.

What engine is it getting? Any competition use planned?

Bevel the topsides so that you have a full depth weld, that will make the bottom weld almost redundant... and then do the bottom just cause it is not as hard as you think.  Practice makes better. Perfect I cant yet vouch for.

Clean clean clean is the one thing that I have learned over and over again. If there is soot in the weld zone, it is not clean enough. Acetone is my go-to for when it matters.
