At that price range you will be shopping for the best bargain you can find. Personally I’d avoid the MTD-built/Briggs-powered ones, and see if you can find a deal on an old Deere.

I bought a Toro with a Honda engine for below your budget. Not self propelled. So far so good.

Need a bit more clarity on what "pretty large" is.  IMHO, for anything over say 1/3 acre you'll want a riding mower or at least a walk-behind with a 42" deck.  Yes, a push mower can work, but with a 20"-ish deck it'll take forever.   It's usually not hard to find project riding mowers on Craigslist or FBMP in your price range, but they'll almost certainly need some work.

The best mower I've ever had is a used Toro that I got for $50.  I've gone through so many cheap mowers from Lowes that only lasted a couple summers.  I would rather get a used good quality mower than a cheap new one.

The first post (and more?) in this thread is missing.

It seemed like a canoe, but they weren’t actually paddling. I’m guessing they were testing the waters with this thread.
