my youngest son has just parked his very tired '99 in my garage and driven off in his WRX
This is the 2nd time I have been in this position as my oldest son took off for the UK several years ago with the car half converted into a dedicated track car. I put it (mostly) back together and it has served as a daily driver but is now in need of some TLC
My thinking was to use as the basis of an Exocet (engine was rebuilt a few years back after spinning a bearing at a track day
Cheap track car!
Exocets are awesome, but i'm waiting to turn my 2000 into one until i wreck it. For the same cost of an Exocet kit, i've put together quite the track weapon. (Or at least i think... i need to actually get it on track first.)
Heavier and slower than an Exocet for sure, but it's still a RIOT.

The stripped Miata will be all that the Exocet will be only a bit heavier. You should be able to get it below 2000lb which will make it fun.
As an in-between step, you can always Miatacet the thing.
This thing has got to be getting close to the Exocet in weight:

Someone needs to make the cage for this thing and sell it as a kit.

Assuming your picture is a Miatacet I'm guessing it might be a bit hard to make street legal ;)

Cause track-car.
But how could it be harder to make legal than an Exocet? Here in Ontario I would start with a road legal Miata already registered in my name, tear it apart and just drive it until told otherwise. As long as I can tick all the boxes on the safety checklist, how can the Ministry complain?

That's kind of my thinking but I'm reluctant to get $10k into this then find I can't use it

I'd really prefer if it stayed street legal
You certainly don't have to make it street-illegal to rallycross it.

That Miatacet is awesomely cool!! But I still prefer the nearly done Exocet in my garage ... That is my vote!!

almost all rallycross cars are steet legal (there are stock classes). And as for stage rally - they are actually REQUIRED to be street legal (since they transit on public roads).

What are you smoking? How could you EVER end up $10,000 into a Miatacet? Even if you tried?
It is a $500 to $1000 Miata with the panels removed and a cage welded in place, maybe $500-$1000 if you farm the cage out. And you are done. Take it to the track and have fun.
Buy a panel crunched miata, sell all the blingy bits that you don't need and you would be hard pressed to be $1000 out of pocket by the time you drive it.
By the way, I hereby claim the rights to inventing the word "Miatacet"![](/media/img/icons/smilies/crazy-18.png)

I'm still thinking an Exocet Your ride looks like lots of fun but way too raw for what would work for me
Buy two sets of tires. Snows for rallycross, something a bit sticky for track/autocross. Go play with it. Just have fun. Don't do things TO it, do things WITH it.
