Yes it would work, but the 4matic GLK's are known to have transfer case issues with the v6.

oh shoot really? so i'd probably have to get a whole new transfercase or something im assuming.

Now that it's in and running here's the breakdown

Parts used:

M273 5.5l V8 from an 07-09 CLS550

Bought new M273 water pump, belt tensioner, and idler pulleys

Bought thermostat/housing and radiator hoses for W212/C207 E550

Used original GLK radiator and fan but I will need an E550 or 13-14 GLK radiator for a proper overflow connection down the road

Used M272 alternator, a/c compressor, ps pump though the alternator and a/c compressor are different they appear to be working fine

The power steering and a/c lines are different but since the M272 sits further back in the bay there was enough slack that they moved forward with the M273 just fine.

New LUK clutch/flywheel set bolted up just fine

The ECU was part number A2739000700 from a 2010 E550. The locksmith that virginized and programmed it used Abrites

Coding the ECU for the manual was the same as the M272, just changed getriebe from NAG2 to NSG. I coded the ESP/ABS module to M273 as well but I'm not sure if that was needed. The central gateway recognizes that the engine ECU is for a v8.

All that's left is to change the rear badge from GLK 350 to GLK 550

Also mods can we please change the thread title to V8/Manual swap

What is the part number of the clutch set and flywheel? Is it the same things between m272 273 ?

Clutch set: LUK 11055

Flywheel: LUK DMF078

Yes it's the same, though you may need to space out the flywheel from the crank depending on which rear main seal housing you have.

Swapping in heated/ventilated real leather upper/lower seat cushions from the W212. The rear seats will come from a W212 wagon but they're harder to come by.

The factory seats are vinyl and I can't stand vinyl seating.

I'm having trouble on the 722.907 transmission from my w204c63. I'm wondering if I can replace my broken 722.907 with the 716 mt gearbox , that would be perfect.

I would imagine you could but I haven't seen a single documented M156/716 swap out there.

Give it a whirl and make a thread!

Random question, but do you think you could get a manual swap to work with a CLK63 Black with this same style of coding?  I think they are the same generation as this?

In reply to SpeedAddict502 :

Most likely. There's tons of manual swaps on the regular CLK out there, the only hiccup I would think would be the engine ECU. It's an ME9.7 like mine so likely the same process, but I haven't found anyone that's done an AMG manual swap to know.

Me and my kid have been following your project, and have done something similar - put a m273 5.5 L into a C230.  We have hit an issue, and wanted to see if you have any input.

Here's the basics.  We virginized the ECU, had the C230 VIN written to the ECU, got it personalized and activated.  We used the harness from the  M273.  We went into Xentry Implicit Coding and basically replicated what was in the C230, along with appropriate changes for the m273 in the C230, 5.5L, Manual, etc..Car starts, but runs like hell (just getting it running is no small deal).  Random misfires, cylinders 2,4,5.  We have not yet put the exhaust back on, or the radiator back together because of the space constraint issue.

We did do the camshaft position relearn, fuel pump relearn on Xentry.  And we have good fuel pressure and spark.

My kid did voltage testing on the cam position sensors and thinks there is 12v power to both sides.  I know that you had that issue. However, he did notice that there are extra pins on the M273 harness, and he seems to think the voltage is not consistent.  So any color you can add on how exactly you jumped power between the cam position sensors would be helpful.

Not trying to hijack this thread, but looking for a hand if you can.  If this thread should be moved, no problem.  The above summary is brief, but the project is fairly complex with pleanty of speedbumps, as you know.

It is pretty amazing to see how quick you progressed your swap.   We definitely did not move nearly as fast.  The project can come to a halt various times when issues came up - such as this one.  I'm trying to get things moving again and overcome this latest issue.

Also - for what its worth - we did take the old engine out of the C230 and put it into a E350 that needed an engine.  It started right up - no issues - but this project has been a whole different animal.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Congrats on getting it running! C230 is W203 right? Did you already modify the ECU for clutch switch input?

I had power to both sides as well when I first did the swap but it was weak on one side.

This plug in the M273 harness goes to the body harness, you can see the M273 side has 2 wires while the body side only has 1.

To fix that I took this red/silver wire and spliced in the red/black that goes to the drivers side of the engine.  The splice was made in the harness on the passenger side of the engine.

Looking back on this now, you could probably just splice the two wires in the engine harness to body plug together and call it a day. Don't know why I didn't do that in the first place.

Our issue seems to be different.  Yes, we have a 203, and the harness seems to be slightly different than yours.

1) At the plug you reference, we have two wires on the body AND engine side,  whereas you had only one on the body side.    One wire on the engine side goes straight to a small emissions fan, the other goes to injectors and likely elsewhere.

2) Adjacent to that two wire plug, there is a 8 wire plug in our harness.  I'm assuming you have something similar.  Now on that plug, there 8 connection points on the engine side, but there are only 5 connection points on the body side.  We're thinking that perhaps this is an issue, Is that the same case with your harness?

Looks like I have 7 pins populated on mine. That could be your  issue. Do you have wiring diagrams? I subscribed to alldatadiy for my diagrams and they've been super helpful.

I tried to hit the easy button on the GLK ignition and just have the dealer replace it but of course they refused to work on it because of the engine/trans swap. Contacted a few ebay sellers offering EIS cloning services and never got responses from them so I decided "berkeley it, I'll do it myself" and bought an autel IM508s pro.

Does anyone here have experience with these and Mercedes EIS replacement? I've found videos on the process and it seems easy enough but I'm just trying to get a full handle on it before my (second) ebay ignition arrives.

I should have bought one of these years ago that was so easy to do. Followed this guide: Clone Mercedes EIS Ignition Switch W204 W207 W212 FBS3 with Autel IM608 XP400 EASY! (youtube.com)

Backed up my old EIS data, calculated the key password for the new EIS, erased the new EIS, wrote my old EIS data, activated new EIS, programmed my 2 new keys to it.

I also had to renew my steering lock with the new key password.

We're pretty sure that the issue is the intake manifold - which is a persistent Mercedes problem. In general it's operating pretty well, once we get the manifold either serviced or replaced, we will post and advise whether or not it works.

Hey also, this car was flex fuel stock, do you think will be able to get it running on E85 without doing all what you had to do?

it seems like your issue was the fact that you did not have an ethanol sensor, which we have. Any thoughts?

I would compare your variant coding in your old engine ECU to what's available in your new one. Maybe check over coding in your front sam, cgw, and fuel pump control module. None of my stuff had any settings for flex fuel, I'm curious if you do.

I'm a new user here but I just wanted to chime in and say I'll be the proud new owner of your swapped E550! The check is being sent to the dealership that has it listed for sale in Raleigh, NC and I'll be picking it up on Thursday. I test drove the car last Saturday and it really is a phenomenal machine. Just wanted to ask a couple maintenance questions about it so I can get it on schedule for everything going forward. It'll be in good hands and I plan on keeping it a very long time alongside my E39 M5 (which just turned over 350k miles today).
