It's tradition that before you pick up a project you start a build thread.  A couple of weeks ago I bought this.  I lusted it when it was first put up for sale a couple of years ago.  Then when ojannen put it up for sale this Feb I was in a very uncertain part of my life.  I talked with him but didn't follow thru on buying it.   A few weeks ago I thought about the car and thought that I should contact him to see if it was availalbe.  A few day later he posted this.

This is still on the market and I would like to get one of my garage spots back.  The official asking price is now, the FMV of each of the 6 wheels is $250 and if you brought your own set of 4x100s with 22.5" tires, I might let this go for challenge money.

Challenge money?  Oh now you got my interest.  We went and looked it that Saturday and struck a deal for $1700 minus wheels.

It needs some things to be Challenge legal hence the price.  I know it needs the firewall redone with thicker metal.  Also needs lights front and rear.  I got lights off Amazon.

Some front wheels from Lof8.

Suprang will donate rear wheels.  I'll have to find the receipt but that'll add $80 to the budget.

I'll use what Dusterdb13 and I refer to as the Columbia aluminum to redo the firewall.  I'll have to find that also but shouldn't be over $20.

Also made a deal with Dusterdb13 on some used drag tires.

So current budget is:

Car                      $1700

Lights                  ~$10

Front Wheels       $50

Rear Wheels        $80

Firewall                 $20

Drag tires             $62.50

Total is               $1922.5

Damn that's cutting it close.

Good thing you've got 8 acres of land up north.  Does this one put you up over 20?

Actually no.  I haven't counted in a while but this is number 16. Two of those belong to Lil Stampie and two are parts cars so really 12.

Also, is this the first time you won't be competing in half budget?

BTW, awesome score.  Kinda jealous if I'm completely honest. yes

I just helped stampie load the car up on the trailer.  I forgot how annoying it was to load this car on a trailer.  It is low.

I appreciate you selling it to me and I especially appreciate your help loading it. That would have kicked my shiny doing it by myself.

ojannen first showed me the jack points so that we could swap on my rollers.

The jack point is a captive bolt that slides out enough for a jack to grab it. One per side and it lifts both wheels.

As he said this car is a little bit of a pain to load. Nice that it's so light you can push it but it's low. It would have helped if I had brought four rollers full of air instead of just three full ones.

We were going to stop for dinner but we decided to just head home. Stopped for the mandatory gas station picture.

We just got home.  All I did was disconnect the trailer and park the Suburban. Tomorrow I'll look at draining the old gas.

I had some time today while not watching my Jags get their behinds kicked.  First thought was charge the battery.  I didn't have an electric cord long enough so I decided to take the battery out.  That took 15 minutes while I tried to figure out how it fit in there.  Surely you didn't need to remove the fuel cell or the radiator hose to take out the battery?  Finally I figured out how to twist and turn it just right to get it out.  Did all that to find out the battery was already fully charged.

Not totally happy with the battery connections and I know I'll need to redo the hold down to meet NHRA specs.  Pretty sure they don't allow wood hold downs.

I think I can do it to where the battery fits easier and it's lightweight.  I just did a general look over and saw some things that I'll have to figure out.  There's a schrader valve on the coolant overflow tank.

This valve is connected to the intake.  Trying to think what it might be for.  Manual control of unmetered air for idle control?  ojannen suggested that I contact a guy that knew a lot about the car so that's a question I'll have to ask.

The front suspension is upper and lower A arms with bell cranks.  The bell cranks were hooked to this bar at one point with heim joints.

The belt is expired but the the early 80s Argentinian and Colombian production models came with 3 point belts so I'll just weld those attachments points in and use them.  Should pass tech no problem.

An added bonus is less than a day after getting Tony-san home we have recoup.

Don't tell Kuma that I would have taken $100.

The knob in the door is for the idle mix

The disconnected bar with the rod ends is a sway bar.  I was told it was optional depending on the rest of the suspension setup.

In reply to ojannen :

Thanks.  Glad I guessed right on the idle mix.  I thought the rod might be some sort of sway bar.  The end inside the fender isn't connected so I'll have to wrap my head around how it works.

In reply to Stampie :

I was confused by that part too.  The sway bar piece ties into the wishbones as you would expect.  Maybe a remnant of an old suspension design?

Dave Coleman did a writeup years ago about using a shrader valve as a one-way method to add coolant to a hot engine with a garden sprayer. My friend tried it on his XJ6 and it worked well. I wonder if that's what's going on here.

Today I got back on it.  First I created Draininator v1.0 and hooked it up to the return line at the tank.  I just turned on the fuel pump and let it drain the tank.

I then ran down to the new Wawa station a few blocks away.  I swore they had E85 but nope.  I had to head to another station about 6 miles away.  I flushed the system twice more by filling it a gallon or so then draining.  Loved how cheap race gas is at the station.

Before firing up I decided to check the oil and couldn't find the dipstick anywhere.  Finally I saw this little slide door on the firewall.

Yep found it.

That checked we went to start it up and no go the first few tries.  Then on the fourth it spuddered and started up.  I filmed that in vertical mode and no one likes vertical mode so this is the restart we did once it was warmed up.

I think that deserves some Angle's Envy Bourbon.

Honda K20 with Integra GSR VTEC head, Titanium retainers, aftermarket valve springs, JDM Honda 1.6 factory cams, 14:1 Wiseco forged pistons, Eagle forged H beam rods.  Makes 210hp to the wheels at 8k rpm.

All that info from the builder.

What's the story on the rally tires? Did someone rallyX it at some point?
