I like these cars. I have owned a few. However, mpg really sucks for what it is. As the ad even says, expect 25 mpg combined on a good day. Many days lower like 22. Even all hwy, won't break 30 mpg. The fault of the poor mpg seems to be the auto trans.
Ad says, "had abs breaks." What happened to them?
In this thread you can see what I learned about missing tone rings from rear drums that caused my Focus to loose the abs.
Rocker panels are where these cars rust quickly. The passenger front door and rocker seem to be where it starts the worst. I notice your ad doesn't give a picture of this area. What body pictures are shown are taken from high and keep you from seeing rockers.
If the steering wheel shakes at idle, it is a bad passenger side motor mount. Big and easy to see from the top. Near the alternator.
The Cooper tires might be pretty worn. Being this is a SES, it got the 16"ers which then tires will be more expensive than the 15"ers I had.
The 16"ers will be in the $100 each range (mounted) and the 15"ers would be $75 range
I think some of the current best deals on cheap cars are non sporty cars with manual trans
Scion xB asking $3k
In reply to John Welsh :
Thanks but not a big fan of xb body style! Fuel mileage is a concern on the Focus. Not in a hurry so I'll keep looking.

And if you replace it with an aftermarket one, it will still shake. Buy the OEM one.
Generally the same poor mpg since automatic but cheap buy-in...$1600 Escort coupe
