In reply to drock25too : nope. Very narrow engine bay ( have pondered many possibilities). 4 cylinder or maybe rotary ( I have a good street port 12A....). Time is the issue☹️☹️
In all seriousness, those are tremendous cars. Volvo's reputation was largely built on them. Great platform for customizing, also. The stock pushrod motors were bulletproof but kinda clattery, and the long-throw transmission was undergeared. I've had a hankering to throw a modern aluminum 4 cylinder with 5-speed into one. 175 HP in a 2050 lb package would be a right fun ride. This donor would be a good starting place if the rust isn't too bad.
Well....dammit....I'm probably gonna need to keep it & swap it. Did a 90% clean out & overdue inspection: front floorboards are nicely patched with galvanized tin (so well done it was almost overlooked) , rear floorboards have not too bad weight reduction & drain holes created by old age. Passenger door glass is not in door. Found it in jigsaw pieces in rear floorboard.
In stock swap possibilities: Toyota 4AC & T50? Street ported 12A & 4 speed Jerico?
