My parents bought one of those new and I'm pretty sure it was under two grand. Same color too.
Ford had a bunch of cars that were vandalized at some central lot in New York and they discounted them. Their car had a hole in the passenger side door panel that looked like it was poked with a pencil. That was the worst of it.

Sounds right. I recall they were advertised for $1995 the first year or two. A new 1970 Beetle was priced at $1874.
