As seen in my BAT thread, a buddy of mine is selling his 1991 Mercedes 500SL. Neither of us know much about its origin, although there is a sticker on the doorjam saying it adheres to FMVSS, and it was imported from Japan in 2007. Since importation, it has had three owners from within BC and has been fairly meticulously maintained.

Key notes:

Full repaint within the past few years, and said paint is in great shape.

The automatic climate control works great.

The top mechanism is fully functional.

The exhaust system that has been fitted produces an excellent tone without being super loud.

The dashboard, door trims and carpets are in great shape.

The brakes have some good life left in them.

Most of the cooling system has been replaced in the past few years.

This is a reliable, turn-key car that can easily be driven across the continent right now.

No mechanical issues!

.

Imperfections:

There are some very minor scratches on the hood, a minor scuff on the rear bumper, and a small but deeper scuff on the right front fender lip.

The right front wheel has some very minor curb rash on the brushed lip (easy to sand out and brush smooth).

One of the roller covers to the storage tray is missing.

The veneer on the ashtray is cracked, and it doesn't quite match the console veneer as the console was re-finished with hydrographic wood print.

The armrest is starting to peel under the lid following a botched glue repair by a previous owner.

There is a small section of driver's seat seam that has come undone, due to an eager dog.

The odometer gear was broken for a short amount of time, although records strongly suggest that less than 1,000 km (600 miles) were put on the car in that time.

A previous owner patched a small split in the convertible top's plastic window with clear tape.

There's some steering wheel wear underneath the stitched leather cover. .

Upgrades:

Tarox big brake kit.

Multi-piece AMG wheels (fairly expensive on the used market).

Full stereo system with Infinity speakers and amp, and a Kenwood head unit.

Full stainless 3" exhaust with a Magnaflow muffler.

Post-facelift taillights.

Glass headlamp lenses.

Slimmer, more ergonomic steering wheel from a later model.

Headlight wiper delete.

.

There are some more photos hotlinked below, and here's a link to a rather comprehensive Imgur gallery. He wants to list it at $11k Canadian ($8k US), although there's probably some wiggle room in there for the right home.

In reply to dean1484:

It doesn't have an AMG engine, but it definitely has the right wheels, so maybe it was deemed worthy of the emblem by an AMG retailer in Japan during the mid-90s?

91 would have a pre-merger badge, not a post merger badge which is what's on it. A pre merger badge is just the block AMG without the slashes. Back in the Pre-merger days you were "allowed" to use a badge if you has at least three major AMG components, or if it was an AMG factory built car...I even have an old Beverly Hills Motoring accessories catalog, official AMG dealer back in the day, which states this about the components. My 6.0 converted 560SEC qualifies for a badge since it was delivered to AMG as new and got the 6.0 conversion, full exhaust, suspension, diff, etc, but the owner wanted a sleeper, so didn't spec a badge or even the AMG valve covers when he ordered the car. You could pretty much spec anything you want, so there are all kinds of builds as opposed to the canned builds post merger.

Regardless, the car is very clean and looks to be priced right.

My 5.6SEL was one of the last cars built by AMG West pre-merger, they only built 24 W126 that year.

This is sitting in a impound lot in socal somewhere now, the guy who bought it from the guy who bought it from me got picked up with a load of drugs. They contacted Bruce since it hadn't been taken out of his name but he stayed away from it.

Thanks! I'm thinking the SL modified post-merger, after it was shipped to Japan. It's got the wheels and the diff for sure, I'm just not sure if it has a third anything.

You'll need to log in to post.
