It very much pains me to actual write these words and make the decision to sell off this Montero.
This is The Sumo Wrestler as detailed in this thread.
During the early days of Covid, the Montero developed a difficulty to move the shift lever as detailed in this thread. I then spent a lot to have the shift cable replaced. All was good for about 400 miles when the shift difficulty returned. The suspicion was that, the second shift cable needs to be replaced too. That was also the advice that I got from ExPo.
Meanwhile, business was slowing during Covid so I just left the Montero parked at the right end of my driveway. I figured I would get back to the Montero as business improved...it has not. Secondly, I jumped on the opportunity to buy a Grand Caravan cheap off Hertz just before their bankruptcy filing. This then put some redundancy to the real need for the Montero and its 3rd row seating.
My real intention, as business improved...which it didn't, was going to be to refresh the Montero into a more Overlander. When we first got the Montero we took if offroading in Michigan and it performed exceptionally, even in it's stock form.
- The tires are worn but that was going to be a great opportunity to add a more aggressive tire.
- The front struts/shocks are worn but that too was a great opportunity for a slight lift.
- The front bumper still has a crack in the plastic but that was going to be a great opportunity for a metal bumper/winch combo. Something like this Jeep JK bumper fab'ed in has been my inspiration.
- The body is exceptional. This was a Charleston, SC truck brought to Ohio about 4 years before I bought it and I have then had it for 4 more years. We have driven it sparingly in those years adding just 15k miles in my ownership. It was mostly driven by my wife, the school teacher, who lives just 2 miles from the school. The Montero currently has 218k miles. There is so much more life left in this truck.
The interior is in exceptional shape with just some very minor wear on the driver's bolster. The body and chassis is unusually great for a truck up north. The engine runs very strong. The shift lever will not currently move to the D position but when it does, the Monetro drives perfectly.
Located in Sandusky, Ohio area.
Am I crazy to ask $2,000?
Trailer needed. Otherwise its a long drive in reverse only. Yes, the lever can be moved to reverse and neutral. I'd be happy to help with loading.
