I'm not convinced the title situation is as simple as this guy is making it out to be. Imported cars are tricky to get titled unless they are over 25 years old (or you live in Florida lol), but maybe you could get a show and display exemption for this somehow. The car has an interesting story for sure.

Oh there is no chance in heck you'll get a title for that for at least 8 years. If it was so easy then why didn't the seller title it first.

I always hate people that are like ohhh you can get a title for this no problem under XXX provision. My answer is great, I'll buy it once the process is complete.

I look at it in the same light as the people that say "it just needs XX part for $XX.XX. Easy fix". Ok, then fix it and I'll pay full price.
I think this is a crack-head price for a car that won't be registered, isn't original, and quite frankly won't have much of an enthusiast following. An orphaned-brand car museum should offer him $5K

I thought that what actually mattered was when the car arrived on US shores and that you had to prove that it didn't arrive here until 25 years after its manufacturing date.

In reply to wae :

That's my understanding too. I've imported a couple of cars myself, and all my research beforehand indicated that it doesn't matter if the car is 25 years old now, if it wasn't when it was brought over it's no good. That's not to say I haven't seen people bring cars over before their time, but I bet if they ever got noticed they wouldn't be able to easily dig themselves out of that hole.

Correct. Snowballs chance of getting a good title for that thing. I'm sure you could get a bum Florida state title, but why risk $30k.

CBP will seize and crush that...

You would then have to chase the person who sold you illegal goods and HOPE you can sue and get your money back. (good luck)

Long story short, a state may give you some documents and a tag, but it isnt here in the US legally and the feds can seize it as what amounts to illegal smuggled goods and you will not be compensated. Reading the ad, it was brought as a test vehicle, that kind of importation has a date it has to be out of the country or proven destroyed and there is a bond involved. Obviously someone didnt get their bond money back (whoever brought it in for testing, often other OEM's will bring one in to do some comparison testing and benchmarking), but that doesnt free the vehicle.  Customs and Boarder Protection would be low key looking for it (obviously they have higher priorities for enforcement activities using taxpayer dollars than hunting something like this down, but if/when it falls in their lap, like say if they saw this ad...).

"Easily get a title as a custom vehicle"  Now that is funny.

Wouldn’t buy at that price but should be able to be brought legally to Canada (15 year rule)
