Could make an interesting Challenge entry project with either the original engine, or the "doomsday diesel chevy" they were planning to swap into it...

 Doomsday Diesel is the name of the company that made the adapter to mate the Merc diesel to the Chevy bellhousing so that you can use the SM465 with the OM617...

Thanks for the clarification. I missed the "chevy v8 trans" and just assumed they were planning to swap in some diesel Chevy engine...

SM465 is an odd choice for this project. That shifter will be up under the heater box.
