Thinking about picking up something to keep salt off my truck since I have to actually drive to work several days a week.

must be presentable, not soul sucking, automatic. Prefer wagon. Luxury? 20+mpg. Not rotten, I want to get in and go all winter then sell in April for what I paid. I'm in NE Ohio but will be heading to NC at some point in the next 2 months.

I tried to CL an audi today but the seller was stupid. Don't make me deal with stupid people please.

In reply to Patrick :

Sounds like what you need is a Subaru Baja, say one with 200k miles.  You and Pete spend some time making it road worthy then do a few months of road testing to verify reliability.  Come April you send it back South in better running condition than when it arrived

I tried before he even picked it up.

Do you know anyone super smart with Volvos?

This one being non-turbo and non-awd should mean simplistic.  This one even has cloth seats which are pretty desirable due to their durable nature.  At 118k now should mean it has less than 150k when you sell it in the spring.

That ticks the boxes and a Saab or Volvo wagon is high on Carli's want list. We're going to the cabin tomorrow and won't be back until next week, if it's still there I'll have her message on it. Something like that could end up a long term winter car vs a dump it in the spring deal. I can already see a light bar and roof rack on it

Yeas ago I had a '95 Volvo 850 wagon.  Non-turbo and manual trans.  It was a super pleasant car.  It was the same 2.4L 5 cyl as this.  As you might expect, it felt like a big 4cyl or a small V6.  Not fast but pleasant.

I highly recommend.

I have a 1986 Saab 900 non-turbo 5-speed. I would call it very presentable with small amounts of rust. Heater is very strong. Recently decided to stop running though. Seems to be fueling, trying to figure out. If interested I'm near Milwaukee.

If Patrick isn't interested in this, we should at least talk numbers. I don't NEED another one right now, but I have a soft spot for 900 sedans.

Pat, when you get home we can also talk about my wagon if you'd be interested.  For you it would probably be a one day project.

That Volvo looks about perfect for what you're looking for though!

I'm getting ready to sell my son's 2009 Volvo S40. 144k with a E36 M3-ton of recent work, including timing belt and water pump. Needs nothing rust free. But it's not a wagon and it is an auto.

Update to those whom my comment caught the eye of- the Saab is running and driving again. Don't want to muddy up someone else's thread, reach out to me directly if interested.

Still looking, the general feel is 5 cyl v70 or xc70 of an early 2000's vintage, much like the one John posted above. I couldn't talk myself into that one because after looking at the history report it looks to have only accumulated 9-10k miles in the last 11 years so it did a LOT of sitting. Cars that sit have weird problems. I was going to go look anyway but someone got there first.

A couple of Volvo things...

The Volvo tan leather material is inferior to the charcoal leather (black).  The tan leather wears poorly and looks like crap quickly.  The cloth is the most durrable but it is pretty rare, only found on base models.

If the car has headlight wipers then it has heated seats as part of the "cold climate package."  In the newer models they did away with the actual wiper blade and resorted to just water nozzle squirters for the headlamps but still cold climate package.

On the awd models it is common for "the transfer case" (not really called a transfer case) to go bad and the budget fix is to just remove the driveshaft thereby neutering the car to fwd only.  So, if the car has awd badges I'd still recommend looking under for driveshafts coming out of "transfer case".  Pete is ultra versed in all of this and knows it better than my layman's approach.

Sample black interior ad

Sample tan interior 3 years newer and same miles:

My former 850 manual trans NA wagon was this color, right down to the same wheel covers.  But, it had charcoal leather.  The beige exterior was not my favorite but it hid dirt well and the charcoal leather was durable.  It turned out to be a pretty practical color combo.

The $4400 xc70 with 109k is twice the car with half the miles of all the ones in the $2900-3500 range. But I don't want to spend that much. Very conundrum. Logic says another grand for 70-100k less miles is a no brainer. Brain is having a hard time wanting to spend the $.

In reply to Patrick :

I wasn't as much suggesting those specific cars but more using them as examples of interior condition.

However, that $4,400 black interior is also an Atlanta car so that extra spend also buys you what should be rust free .  But it could also potentially have burnt paint.

Oh i know it's just the price point of 3k is like what used to be $1500 so all this looking is weird.

New development, have been offered a vehicle through a friend of my sister, we'll see if anything happens there before continuing searching.

I have a 2007 expedition with no real problems aside from some of the common rocker rust (which they make weld over patch panels for, so not an awful fix).

2wd, no 3rd row, about 190k on it. Plugs done in the last few years, front struts as well. Front brake soft lines replaced a few years back too.

Up for sale as soon as I get a few things done on the wife mobile.

You'll need to log in to post.
