I'm wanting to clear a bit of garage space (and add a few dollars to the Europa build), so I'm looking to sell my Coventry Climax FWM engine. It's half converted to automotive use, the big bit missing is a flywheel, and it does need a head gasket (available from Tony Mantle in the UK) along with a front crank pulley nut (should be easy to make as its 5/8" UNF). The intake manifold has been converted to take twin HS2 SU carbs (though it does need a bit of welding to fix one small hole). The bottom end has been gone through, cleaned (it hadn't run in probably 40 years), and re-ringed. I made a new backplate for the motor to accept a BMC A-series gearbox, but the back plate requires a bit of milling for the rear main seal housing. The engine comes with the stock back plate, along with a set of HS2 carbs (they require rebuilding). I had originally wanted to use this motor in either Lotus 7 clone, or a Lotus 11 clone, but I just couldn't find time or space to build another one. The latest thought was to turn it into a coffee table.
Its located just outside of Vancouver, BC, but I could help with arranging shipping. I'm asking $500 obo.
Before manifold mods, but with gearbox
During manifold mods
In the chassis it was originally picked up for (chassis has been reduced to a small pile of scrap already).

What's the displacement? I thought these were OHC but w/o crossflow, I'd say not??
Mark,
Its an FWM so 748cc, and it is an OHC non-crossflow. I still have the original cast iron exhaust, but it's useless for automotive use and it's definitely not racy enough for a display piece.

Just to derail the thread, this is a picture of my friend Peter and his Royal Enfield which is powered by a Coventry Climax engine from a Hillman Imp.
Everything to do the conversion was built by him, the bike has been through many revisions since the project started in the 1970s.
The man has an incredible amount of talent.
There are so many WTFS? in that, I don't know where to start. Its a 748cc taking up as much room as a 1500cc plus the Royal Enfield chassis is weak at best plus..... (It is cool, however)

Considering it's held together for 40 years, been upgraded and modified the whole time, it's been to South Africa and back, probably seen more of the world than I ever will...
It's just fine.
It's also not a 748, it's a 998.
748, 998 are we taking CC engines or Ducatis. ;)
So what is the approx Bhp on this??
Actually the Imp isn't really a Coventry Climax. It's roughly based on the FWM but shares no common parts with it, save for the generic Lucas ignition bits. BHP on the stock FWM was something like 40, but with twin carbs and a free flowing header, maybe 55ish. Definitely no barn burner.
So no more than my mildly modded 948.
Probably no more than your 948, but it's quite a bit lighter. I haven't put it on a scale but I'm guessing it weighs in around 140 lb wet.

If you were closer I might pick it up. I haven't had a decent climax in quite some time.
Side note: would be perfect for somebody with a collection of vintage forklifts and fire pumps.
Bump, price lowered to $250 as I need the space.
Too bad you're not closer. It'd be kinda cool to see this under the hood of a bugeye
I would love that thing just for a piece of art. It would also make as awesome log splitter.
Maybe you can post an ad in this club's newsletter

That would look cool in my Spitfire.
Roddymac17 if the engine is still available I would be Interested!
