This is not quite what you were asking for, but I kinda like this '62 Chevy.

Looks to be about 2.5 hours south of Gainesville.

Just from the photos, that's not a $2k truck..  Ad shows $19,900 in the first line...

My reading has me believing that my 96 is the only year without vvt.... and I have zero budget for mods other than the wheels/tires I already have.

Oh, yeah 1996.  That was the last year for Gen1 Q45 ('90-'96) and '96 was the years that the car had to meet OBD2 standards.  I don't know about not having vvt for that year but I do know that '90-'95 can do "plug and play" with the ECU and '96 can not.   I am not specifically sure what makes '96 excluded from ecu swap.  That could be due to protocols or it could be that '96 doesn't have vvt.   For '97 the 4.5L engine was discontinued in favor of the 4.1L engine in the Q45s along with different body style.

And HERE is the one I really think has potential.

Probably too risky a project to get running and road trip in, but these are rare out East.

What about just buying a cheap car in Gainesville from a shady lot or CL.  Race it.

Drive it back.  Or leave it.

Definitely NOT in budget!

This is totally not helpful but I'm having fun looking at the car market in your backyard instead of mine.

Lots of cool old stuff out here. The sun eats paint and interior parts, but things rarely die from rust.

If nothing else, maybe this becomes a thing in years to come. Someone sees something out west they want, I can bring it to Florida in October for 1/2 gas/food costs or something.

Korean Traccord?

or a couple of auto-V6 options...

one
easy steering rack fix?
lots of miles, and supposedly just cosmetic issues?
so much smoke smell, it's killed the airbags?

these are 5x114, and might could fit your mustang wheels.

just don't drop it on H&R springs... especially with SPC adjustable balljoints on the upper arms.

BEST OPTION YET - $600

Cheap, High sticker cred, bypass heater core and either swap or get the radiator professionally cleaned (and pray the HG isn't already FUBAR).

Win longest drive AND Radwood?

Or THIS ONE.

Rad flames AND either one doubles as a nice hotel. Room service optional.

I am not in Utah but am a 30 minute drive from the Gainesville airport with an 09 P71 that I don't really need now that I have just bought a new (to me) Mustang.

Car is in fairly good condition, the paint on the horizontal surfaces is bad, but I would have no qualms about driving the car to Portland (Oregon or Maine) and back.  It was (and for all intents is still) my daily driver.

Not sure what the rules are on this, but the Camaro is plated and insured. It doesn't run well, but I will *let* Barefootskater use it as a challenge car if he doesn't find something else, especially if he can get it running well for me.

Budget is probably at $1,030 if we include the brake light switch. Otherwise, budget is $1000, which is what I paid for it.

Plans are evolving. I prefer to drive and beat on my mustang I think. Working with Gumby on a plan to help the handling en-route. I have some wheels and tires I'd love to use but no budget for a proper 5 lug swap.

So. Looking for some 4x108 to 5x4.5 adapters. Cheap! I'll buy new if needed.

No adapters. Looking for a pair of 4x108 wheels with 17" diameter. I have tires. Otherwise, any combo of 4x108 with decent tires.

4x108 17"...

that sounds like Focus SVT wheels?

some in  palmdale, cali

edit:
you might look for 4x108 to 4x114 adapter... then that opens you up to some late-90's honda sizing

In reply to sleepyhead the buffalo :

I'm not super concerned with the front wheels for now. If this wild plan works out, eventually it'll get a proper 5 lug conversion. I'd attempt it now, but with my manual brake system there is sure to be a snag or two and I CANNOT afford to not finish in a day. Axle swap, front springs, sway bars. That's perfectly reasonable. Designing a brake system, probably not.

So if I can find 17" wheels for challenge, great, if not, oh well.

What is your 17" wheel budget? What is your tentative route to Gainesville? Are you stuck on 17" wheels or would you be in for a full set of 15"s (etc.) with tires if they fit budget?

fair enough...  here's some options might be able to bribe a local to get?

some 4-lug Cobra wheels (might be too pricey?)

For example,

$50 adapter/spacers

4x108 to 4x114.3

I've got a full set of 16x7, 4x114.3 wheels with tires you could use for the challenge. "Budget" hit would be $200 for you to use.

OR,

4x108 to 4x100 For $50 and you can use any Miata wheel
