Looks like my truck will be out of commission for a while.
I need a truck, or a cargo van during the interim. Something that can tow. Reliable highway cruiser. I'll sell again when I am done with it.
Anyone have anything available for sale?
Anyone have something parked they'd like to rent for a while?
Just a thought... A lot of the Amazon subcontractors around here were delivering in U-Haul vans that had "$19.95 per Day" emblazoned on the side.
Would that be a suitable alternative for you while you wait to get your truck back?

I've looked into that. They won't rent them for longer term. (They want them available for weekend moves)

...there is also a mileage fee of $.79 per mile
The curiosity is too much. I know the eco-boost had a lot of miles but you treat it well, what happened?

I am want to be nosey too!
Sorry Paul, that really sucks that your truck is giving you trouble.
Do you know anyone who owns a dealership? A dealer that might have something on the back lot? Or, a trade-in that is "as-is" meaning the dealer hasn't invested anything into the truck?
Anything you might be able to buy at or near a wholesale price and then sell later at a profit?
Maybe he'll sell it to you with an understanding that you sell it back to him at a pre-agreed price? Like he makes $1k off you.

I'm still a fanboy, but nothing lasts forever.
Im actually a little premature... truck is not necessarily dead, but under assessment.
Timing is off, and she's throwing codes. Quite a few. And loud chain rattle at startup.
I was concerned it was an oil starvation problem, but it looks like the engine may have survived. No metal in the oil. Timing hasn't skipped a tooth yet.
We are opening it up tomorrow to see if there is sludge or metal bits.
It may just be a timing belt, guides, phasers, etc. That's a $4K job from a shop. But the mechanic is really hesitant to put that much into a 240K engine.
Im hopeful. I run full synthetic and change it every 3-5K. Of course, that doesn't mean the motor was never oil starved...
A crate motor would be my choice if I need to, but supply chain issues. Looks like it could be 5-6 months or more for a crate motor.
Still under assessment... I just need to move quickly if I need an interim replacement.

I don't know any dealers offering discounts on trucks these days. Including the ones I work for!
That sucks Paul. I'll be back in GA in a couple weeks and happy to look around or ask some of my coworkers if they have something. I suspect that will be too late though.
Will do. I'll ask some of the guys down there if they know of anything (that's in Columbus) and if they say they have something I'll pass it on.
Would a Mercury Grand Marquis for a few weeks/months help?

I don't think so.
I can drive my MINI. I need to tow, and have something I can work out of.
Fastenal has a 2019 ram pickup with 58k miles for $22,900 down in baxley ga.
https://vehicles.fastenal.com
What towing capacity are you looking for?
Edit: Sorry to hear about your truck! I think if you go with something like a 5 year old or older pickup, a few months and some mileage probably won't take a huge hit in value while you're using it.

I considered these Fastenal Trucks, in-depth, years ago (pre-covid) Then they were an amazing deal. As you know the world has changed but they are still a good deal.
They do sell quickly. Some are listed as "coming soon." All you need to do is send an email and you'll get a quick email response of price.
Sorting through Autotrader, here are some dealership examples of old Fastenal Trucks:
'17 w/54k at $24k
'16 w/27k at $25k
'19 w/31k at $27k
Buying direct you can get: In Nashville, '19 w/48k at $22.2k or In NC, '19 w/52k at $21.9k
In the dealership listings every car has a carfax listing, and in that carfax listing is the actual window sticker. Taken from the '19 above, here is the link to the carfax and then the window sticker
Notice in the carfax that the trucks history starts out Commercial and then Winona, MN is a listed in the ownership/title chain at some point, regardless of State the truck is plated in. On the Window sticker, notice that the trailer hitch is deleted and bed liner is deleted, always.
Good, these 2wd and V8 trucks have never towed anything but you'll also have to install a hitch and wiring so plan for $400 there. No bed liner either, if that matters. Other than that, the trucks are reasonable equipped with some alloys and bright bumpers keeping them from being lowest-end spec.
These trucks sell fast. I suspect it is mostly dealers buying them. Notice that yesterday's Georgia example is gone already.

Don't think I'm looking for a $20k truck.
Im not looking for a replacement truck. I'm looking for an interim truck. My truck will be great when I finish it.
So, either:
- A beater. $5-8K. Cheap, probably ugly, sorta reliable, sell when I'm done.
- A heavier truck tow pig. $12-18k. Prefer less. Not necessarily a good looking daily, but something with more towing capacity than the one I've got for occasional heavier needs.
- A good LS donor candidate. I'd drive about anything if my intent was to cut it up later as a donor for my El Camino.
I considered the $25K or more replacement truck, but I don't think I will get anything better than what I've got, will probably have other issues to deal with. For example, I've got $6K worth of cap and tool boxes sitting on mine (which are custom, and won't swap to another truck).
If I have to take mine off the road to do major work, I will. But supply chain issues could mean the truck is down for 6 months or more. At the end, I'd have a nearly new truck for less than $13K (which would cost me $35k or more to duplicate).
So, it's an interim truck that I can sell later and recoup most of what we put in it.

Plus, Fastenal sells single cab 1500 Rams. Honesty, single cab 1500 Rams aren't worth very much.
I can buy a brand new 2023 single cab 1500 Ram for $30K with a warranty.
But I don't want one.

Yep. I'd do that!
Anyone in Easton PA? Haha!
Oh man. This gets me in the feels. I'm slowly looking around for my next rusty suburban replacement and the prices are silly and the availability is tough. I just don't have tons of time to be running around when a good deal pops up.
I wish you good luck. My only suggestion would be to find a gmt800 Chevy with a solid transmission and go for it. Mine currently has 203k on it and is still chugging.

Your southern head might explode when you got that truck to GA and found that not only is the body rotten out, every bolt is frozen, the aluminum on every accessory is corroded and the first tool you need for any work is a bottle of liquid wrench, the second tool will be a torch...
