I'd just keep the 302. Maybe a quiet exhaust. Possibly a t5.

You want a powerful reliable cheap all aluminum Six?  Look at 90's-2000 jag sedans and XJS  it's not the Iron block one developed from WW2 it's all new real Jag motor about 260 horsepower. That's Net horsepower not gross or Advertized horsepower. 
just for information the Chevy 454 makes 230 net horsepower while the fFord 460 makes 310 net horsepower 

and if you want they even had supercharged versions using Eaton super chargers making something like 370 horsepower. 
Oh and some even had manual transmissions.
