Having had a rampage back when it was new, I'd love to have another. Mine had been a 2.2 AT, and although not fast, was fun. I assume that one is the 1.7 since it seems to be a lower optioned car. The MT should produce some decent fuel mileage. But with the rust belt tin worm, he'd need to be real negotiable for me.
I know someone who bough one of these last fall and should be going on the road this spring. They look like fun.
Myself, I would want a Subaru Brat just cause of the seating opportunities. Wonder what the law would say if they saw you driving around with people in the bed seats?

All Dodge Rampage/Plymouth Scamp trucklets came with the 2.2.
In reply to NOHOME :
The Brat came with full DOT seatbelts for the rear seats.
In fact the seats were there so it could be imported to the U.S. as a 4 seat passenger car instead of a truck, thus avoiding the "Chicken Tax".

I saw the inter webs said that, after I posted! I only had mine for about a year, but a friends Dad had one around the same time with the 1.7. His was a no optioned Plymouth. He did not by his new, so I guess someone could have swapped it, but that would be odd. And it sure did look original. When I bought mine, the salesman really bragged about the special package I bought having the larger 2.2, as well, but we know how they are!

It had to have been swapped. Likely with a Omni, Horizon, Turismo, TC3 as those were available with the 1.6 (Peugot) or 1.7 (VW) power plants in their lowest spec models before the 2.2 was being produced in large enough numbers.
That said, if you were a VW fan and had access to a 1.7 powered Omni/Horizon and wanted a VR6 or 1.8T powered Rampage, you could probably do that using the 1.7 mounts.
I had an '82 Rampage with a 2.2/4 speed combo in '92. Shortly after a friend of my cousin totaled his '89 Horizon, I had a fuel injected 2.2 Rampage with a 5 speed. It also looked completely factory.
These cars are basically legos.
I had no idea. You guys love these things, huh? I had a prof - Mrs. Higgleston or something - whose husband and son both collected these things.

In retrospect, occam's razor says it must have been swapped. but car makers have been known to do some odd stuff that doesnt always make the data books, as well.
Like Cooter said, that platform was essentially a lego set, so I'd believe either. And Mr Rusmisselle has passed away years ago now. Asking him might not have even helped... he may not have even known, not being the original owner. I do know he liked his with the VW 1.7 in it. And only being a rear old when he got it, it seems like an odd swap.
