Yes it is a Miata underneath, but WTF? Even if it started as a really beat Miata there are an infinite range of better solutions. Dismantler is now the best for sure.
Eh, for $1,000 you get an NA6 Miata with NB mirrors and some silly bodywork.

If I recall correctly, that monstrosity pops up every now and then with the same story on various southern Michigan Craigslists. Owner always says he doesn't know much about it.
My suspicion is he actually knows too much about it. At least it's listed at about 50% of the earlier list price.

Who ever designed that body kit had no idea that BMW's depreciate down to nothing in a few years. NA Miatas are worth more than 4 cylinder Z3s now!
That's a great deal if it actually only has 55k on it? If it were close I'd pick it up for spares.

I don't think it had anything to do with depreciation. It was "man, I wish I was rich enough to buy a Z3 but all I have is this Miata". This was when the Z3 was aspirational and there were no $1500 Miatas on CL. The math doesn't work well when you realize how well Miatas held resale at that point and you factor in the cost of the body kit. But they were a thing.
But what about all the rust that is being hidden by the awesome body work?

Does the hood/fenders hinge forward? If so, would make the conversion a bit easier to pull off. (I like the way your thinking btw)

Horry crap Docta Jones! I think it does flip forward, you can see the cut line on the quarters and the picture you posted would back that up.
Also: cheap strut tower bar is/isn't surprising.
