I keep looking at it and envisioning the abuse I suspect it's suffered at the hands of its owner and I hear the words "There is no such thing as a cheap Porsche" shouting while a small part of me says "Yeah. But still....."

Well if it survived that much abuse for that long it's probably well shaken out, right?
You have to figure engine, clutch and suspension. Then paint, etc. So either drive it into the ground for fun or don't buy it.
That's exactly the kind of car I would advise anyone else to avoid, which means that I would probably take a chance on it myself. I mean really, a running 911 for $6k asking? Surely it is worth that in parts.
At least this person is self-aware enough to realize that all this abuse and poor maintenance has affected the car's value. My beef is all the people who completely ruin their car and still ask KBB retail value.

Except it's an automatic

Am I right though - the Tip blips downshifts, and is about the best performance oriented auto one could get at the time outside of automated manuals? (I.e. PDK is better, the ZF boxes going in almost everything today are better, but if you want a performance slushbox that can creep in a parking lot too, and you want it in 1999, you want a Tiptronic.)
If they're the genuine article, the fabspeed bits aren't cheap...
Edited to Add: Seller has a nice (looking) dog.
Seller and I are communicating now. Unfortunately, Indy is four and a half hours away from Chicago. I suppose I could rent a truck and trailer and drive out there... Maybe rent a car here and return it there...
Got off the phone with U-Haul. Looks like a 400mi round trip with a 10' box truck and car trailer is going to be about $340. I'm all set, waiting on some more communication from the seller and I'm heading down to get it. fingers crossed that it's real and not a scam or robbery or the car's even worse than it looks.

Oh boy, this has all kinds of potential for entertainment. For the rest of us at least...
My plan for cash purchases was to open a purpose-specific checking account with a large enough bank to have a full-service branch where I'll be making my purchase. I figured I'd be going in to the branch with the buyer to handle passing the money over. Between theft, civil forfeiture and loss, I wasn't going to carry that cash across long distances.
Sadly, while I did set up the account, I never did find my dream 914.
