Once my dad explained it was just like a floor shift, only on its side I figured it our fairly quickly.
I ice raced one for years and honestly my one Meg memory doesn't recall where the hell reverse is. =~ (
On the 4spd Saabs it is a standard H pattern. 1 is toward the wheel and up, down for 2nd, 3rd is toward the dash and up and 4th down from there. The reverse gate is accessed by pulling the lever away from the column then towards you and down.
