Apparently VW did make something stranger than the THING. Given the power-train it could be pretty capable at least.

Diesel Rabbit engine, at least the ones that were used by the German military.
Popular jeep for the Canadian armed forces. They are funny looking but very capable.

Yup. There are a ton of ex-military Iltis around here. very capable off-road but slooooooooooow. They are heavy. Wanted to enter one in Lemons a few years ago. They have VW motors, but the rest is hard to find and they have 24V electricals.
I keep reading the title as "VW-itis" and am left wondering whether that's an attraction to, or aversion from, VWs?
