On March 17, 1966, Jackie Stewart (then an ambassador for Ford) presented the keys of a brand-new Ford GT40 to James Fielding–chairman of Heenan & Froude, the company that made the dynos the GT40s were tested on.

Fitting, then, that Fielding received the first GT40 MkI Road Car to be delivered to a private owner and the first MkI Road Car to be delivered new in the U.K. In total, just 31 MkI Road Cars were made.

Just five years after the GT40 was delivered, in 1971, Fielding sold the car to his neighbor in exchange for a Rolls-Royce.

Between then and now, the GT40–despite being a road-going model–would end up racing in several different events across England, Australia and Germany.

Today, the car is billed as having been fully restored to its original specifications, including a 289 cubic-inch Ford V8 fitted with Weber carbs and dyno-tested at 335 horsepower.

The listing also notes that the GT40 retains its original body panels, tub and ZF 5-speed gearbox.

Find this 1966 Ford GT40 MkI Road Car for auction from Mecum on January 18.
