Actor/racer Paul Newman loved Volvos, especially those with big, honking American power plants in them. His race team decided to put this 1998 Volvo V90 together for Newman.
This Volvo carries a 6.0-liter Chevrolet LS2 V8 crate engine, which they paired with a four-speed automatic. Want to return the car to its original Swedish glory? No worries, the seller says the original engine comes with it.
David Letterman recalled Newman’s love for Volvos on a talk show with Jon Stewart: “Paul Newman calls up and he says, ‘Dave, I’m thinking about getting me a Volvo station wagon and I’m going to stuff a Ford 302 V8 engine into it. This engine is about the size of a small piano, so we’re going to have to push back the firewall. Do you want one?’” Despite saying Volvos are “just as ugly as homemade shoes,” Letterman took order of one and enjoyed it.
Find this 1998 Volvo V90 “Volvette” up for auction at RM Sotheby’s, with an estimated winning bid of $20,000-$25,000.
