First and lasts are often the most collectible, and this represents the former rather than the later. It’s the first Austin-Healey 3000 made, with chassis number HBT7/101.
Starting its life as a company demonstrator, this 3000 later became a works rally car in 1960, competing in four events while flying the Austin-Healey colors. After that season, the car was sold it a private racer who used it in several more events.
After its life in competition, the Austin-Healey led a more leisurely lifestyle. Several museums displayed it, including the Heritage Motor Museum, the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust at Studley and at the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust at Gaydon. The 3000 has received attention in several publications, including “The BMC/BL Competitions Department,” “Big Healeys In Competition,” “Austin Healey 100-6 & 3000” and “The Himalayan Minor.” There’s also a 1:43 die-cast model of this very vehicle by Vanguard in its Unipart livery.
