He told us we needed a pair of 40 DCOE 2 or 40 DCOE 18 carbs. These two models are of the correct age and have the proper progression holes …

I have seen some older sports racers using (original) DCO series carbs rather than DCOE (the Climax FPF used 58DCO) but can't recall if all the early Lotus, Cooper etc. had DCOEs.
I sourced a used matching set of 40 DCOEs for my little 2002 from Greece, and rebuilt them with help from Pierce Manifolds, Ireland Engineering, Top End Performance, and filtering from RamAir!
Should have run ITBs that look like Webers...
