Hey guys, haven't been on in a while but this is always the best place to ask these types of questions.

The car is a '67 Camaro SS 396 4-Speed/Posi car. It's triple black with a white nose stripe. It's my FIL's car and he has unfortunately suffered several strokes in the last year, so he is not capable of rational decision making. My MIL has made me the person to handle the sale. They unfortunately need the money bad right now, so the car has to be sold.

From what research I have done on 1st Gen Camaro pricing, this car sits at around $30k in price with its condition. I've never handled a sale of a car worth so much, so when I make an ad, what should I ask for? Cash or Certified Bank Check? Signature in Blood? Bush's Baked Bean Recipe?

There isn't much money to spare, so I can't do BaT or anything that you have to pay for, but does anyone else have ideas for place to put it up for sale?

I think based on the one picture that car should bring more than $30k.

I would contact Collin:

Collins Classic Auto

Seems like a great fit to help you move that car quickly at a fair price.

BAT only charges the seller $100. I'd say it's well worth submitting and see if they have an interest. It doesn't cost anything to see if they accept it. Cash or meet at the buyers bank. The baked bean recipe is worth a lot more, so if that's an option, take it.

I second the opinion that you need to list it on Bring A Trailer.

Barring that, Gateway Classic Cars is a nationwide dealer that does consignments. It's worth at least calling them.

I also think that's a lot more than a $30,000 car, especially if it's "numbers-matching". A little work on documentation and presentation can quite literally make a $10,000 difference in price. If your in-laws are that hard up, take a little time and do it right so they don't get low-balled.

As both a buyer and a seller, I've always met up at the bank and had the teller print a cashier's check. It's a good public place to meet a stranger, with a lot of security cameras, and you know the check is good.

I would agree.  Investing a bit now could generate a lot better returns.  Make sure the car is detailed (super clean), get LOTS of detailed pictures, do the research to find out what the critical parts / aspects are to document.  Getting it on BAT will provide critical marketing to let people know it's available (even if it doesn't sell).

This is the sort of car you see on those car shows where they buy the car and quite literally roll it down the street and sell it on "the net" for a big profit.

Does it run and drive? Location? No one here is a Camaro fan?

Are you looking for someone to pay $30k for it and be done?  In you situation I would pay for a good detailing and photographer then list on BAT or other.  Locally we have a high end consignment auto shop a place like hat could handle it also.  At you current valuation it would not last long.

I feel like everyone is getting away from what I'm asking. Even if I do BaT, it may be spring before I can clean it up to get it BaT ready, so it's going to have to go for sale online for now. I need to know what the best way is getting money from possible buyers in a safe and efficient manner. I've never used BaT, so do they handle that for you or is it up to the seller?

I also get I can use a consignment shop, but I'm trying to avoid the middleman if I can. If that's what it comes down to, to sell this car, then so be it, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Yes it runs and drives. Was fully restored 10ish years ago. It's currently in Chicago but will be getting moved to the suburbs shortly.

There's a wide range of what people call restored. To some, a new paint job and replacement of some wear items like bumpers and some interior parts while others only consider it restored if the entire car is disassembled then the body is stripped to bare metal and every part is correct and the car looks as if it just rolled off the assembly line. So you'll need to be very clear what has been done.

You might want to sign up over on https://www.camaros.net/forums/  and post a thread to get input from folks who know the 1st gens inside & out as well as current values. Although I have a '67 RS SS convertible I don't follow the market like those guys do. Depending on the specifics 30K may be on the low side.

If not local, a wire into your account cannot be reversed.

If local, go to a bank and have them hand you cash and deposit it right there and then. Or go to his bank and get a cashier's check.

BAT is not going to collect money. I sold one car and bought two there.
- $5k I sent the seller a cashier's check and he sent the title
- $40k I sent a wire and had the car shipped.
- $5.5k sell, the buyer came in person and brought me a cashier's check.

For payment, I'd stick to the following two methods:

  • wire transfer - as Slippery said, they can't be reversed. That's what I did both when buying the Maxton (after seeing it in person) and when selling the S2k to someone half a continent away
  • cashiers check if I see it printed in front of my eyes at the buyer's bank. Unfortunately cashiers checks have been known to be forged, so I personally wouldn't accept one that came through the mail
  • Paypal/Zelle/Cashapp and similar stuff - maybe, but really only for a deposit.

If you put up a google drive with all the photos we can give you a much better value. If you want it gone like now consider me interested. Cash or wire if we come to a deal no issues there.

What's the time window and or is it like they need $15k by the end of the week?

Do you have a day off to wash/detail/get it checked out? Seems to be a couple classic car clubs and specialist in the area who would probably be able to give it a once over.

BaT is like 10 days max, though don't know what the wait is before it's listed and as many have said only costs a fraction of potential sale price (0.33% if $30k is accurate).

You've got two good homes (three, if I can sell a testicle tomorrow).  I say if the situation is so tight that you cant detail it and BAT it, then PM Steve/Microbe/Me (in that order) and see which one sends the cash first.

Throwing out what your time line is will get you a better idea of what you need to do with it.  Anytime you have to hurry a sale though you are most likely leaving money on the table.  Flippers from all around will snatch that car up and spend a month or two on it and make a decent profit if the car is what it is.

We are just waiting on photos and a few details. I think he's going to take some next week when he's close to it. My brother isn't looking for a flip, he's looking for a car to enjoy.
