Ok, I can't keep it under my hat any longer....
Last night I added to the fleet buy buying a Mk1 Scirocco. Now, this isn't just any Mk1, it is an early car, which are even more rare. Making it even more obscure as this is a 1976 1/2 Super Scirocco. Halfway through 76 VW added fuel injection to the Scirocco, making it the first watercooled VW with F.I. They only made 2000- 2500 of these cars which were all metallic brown, with gold tinted wheels. They also had opening wing windows in the doors, a unique steering wheel, and a few other extras.
Good ole Greg Voth found the car cruising on Craig'slist, and I couldn't say no. Especially once I'd seen the car, and how incredibly straight and clean it is. (original paint,nearly no rust!)
It isn't a runner yet, but should be soon. I'll post pics once I pick up the car next week. I will be away from the board until Monday, so forgive me if I don't post for a bit.
Here's a couple of pics of a good one to tide you over. Keep in mind this is NOT the one I bought. Mine is a project, but a very, very clean starting point.

Color me jealous. I love the early Sciroccos. I've owned two of the MKIIs and would love a MKI. My best friend has an '80 S. That car was a blast to drive.
The problem is that I wouldn't want such a nice example. I'd want to hot rod one and I'd feel guilty doing that to such a nice car.

Nice find! I had a '76 VW Rabbit GTI German import in high school and a friend had a '76 Scirocco. I had Webers and his was FI, I could take him at the line but he'd catch me at 1/8 mile. Oh....... to be young again.

If your friend had a 76 that was fuel injected, it was a Super Scirocco, as they were the only F.I. ones available until the 77 model year when they all became injected.
By the way, the car pictured isn't my car, just a nice example of a completed one. Mine hasn't been on the road since 1986 (gulp). It needs a considerable amount of work, but is a great starting point. I'll post pics soon, as I just brought it home last night!

Super find, Joe... I love the Mk1 'Roccos. And now for the stupid question of the day... Why are these cars called Unicorns??? Inquiring minds want to know. Cheers, Scott

We call cars "unicorns" because they are mythical beasts that are so rare people think they may not exist. Cars that have all but vanished are also referred to as unicorns. The term is usually reserved for the rarest of that model.
Camaro unicorn--- ZL1
Vega unicorn--- Yenko Stinger wagon
Jaguar Unicorn--- XJ13
etc.

...or here in the Northeast: Just about any econo or semi-econo car from the 70's or 80's that is rust free. A good example would be the '77 Celica GT LB that was posted some time ago.
