I just bought a 1959 MGA 1500 and within 2 days solenoid failed (I can jump across the screws and it starts). I tried to order one from Moss but a 'search' turns up 'not found'. Is there another name for a solenoid on a British car? Am I thinking it's a solenoid when it's something else? I'm brand new at this car thing and could use some advice from you more savvy classic car guys.

If I were you, I would clean all of the contacts that you can see at the starter. Also, check your key switch and make sure it's clean too.
If shorting the starter works, I am thinking the issue is elsewhere.
