I had that exact model in H.S.--- first few years of college. Many horrible things were done to that car---- but it kept trucking on. I've always wanted another.

In my opinion, FLORIDA is the key word in the requirements. It needs AC and something other than a rag top if year round use is planned. I was thinking of those Ford retractables from the late '50's. Skyliner, wasn't it? Old, classic, with an interesting feature. But I don't think that any of those that run would meet your price point.

I agree on the Model A! It is certainly fun, pretty dependable, & uses almost no gas. And frankly there aren't a whole lot of stock vehicles out there will beat it 0-15mph. It also comes standard with the poser anti-theft package. Not only does a thief have to know how to drive a stick shift, he/she also have to understand basic hand controls like choke and spark advance. That'd make texting, at least during starting, a real bear!

However, I don't think you'll find any A halfway complete within the $3,000 price range unless, like Tom, you already own it.

Hah, the A is present and accounted for, this will be a different kind of classic. I'm loving that 510 wagon.

Datsun PL-510s in whatever form are truly the cream of the crop for their size in their era! I've owned several PL-510 2 and 4 door models, though never a wagon. But in the early 70's a Single Overhead Cam ride of any type is truly different. Since that ride also had front wheel disc brakes and I.R.S., that was near the top of the world at that time. Though no I.R.S. in the wagon, that vehicle is still two out of three in modern world terms and far superior to anything manufactured by the "Big 3."

BTW: I've never understood why the Datsun 810 (AKA Maxima) never got the attention I feel is/was due. A 2.4 to 2.8 liter S.O.H.C. motor, I.R.S., R.W.D. with either manual or auto transmission with a fabulous ride and lots of rear seat room on a car in the early 70's is what the BMW Bavaria was offering but at a much higher price.

I drove both, when they were still new and didn't see a step up to the much pricier Bavaria at all. In fact, add a few smog devices & I feel the original Datsun 810 (Nissan Maxima) in front engine S.O.H.C. form with I.R.S. would still be competitive.

OMG Wow! I loved the one a friend of mine's Dad had in the '60s in Kentucky. But he was always having trouble finding parts even then. That's one car I'd be scared to even take the serial number plate off of. I'd be scared it would spread and infect my whole garage! I would run away at $950 much less $3950!
