We ( my 15 year old son Aaron and I ) just finished reading the first installment of Tommy and Tim’s Spitfire restoration in the March issue of Classic Motorsports. All we can say is WOW! We are so glad that you guys decided to write about this experience. The story sounds like it could have been written in our shop. Aaron and I are in the beginning stages of his first car project, a 1964 VW Karmann Ghia.

We have had a few false starts in the form of cars that were rougher than we wanted. These cars were parted to recover our investment while we kept an eager eye for the “right one”. We found the car in October, and hauled it home shortly after. It had been in a barn since 1979 (at the same farm our 2006 Challenge Ghia came from) It is ratty, stinky, and generally beastly.. The perfect first project!

Our plan is also to do a rolling ratification. Same basic principal as a rolling restoration, we just are not doing any unnecessary body work. We want to hit some local VW shows this summer with it so we are going rat to save time, ok and rats are cool!

So here are some pictures of Project Super Beast:

As we found it:

First daylight since 1979:

In storage waiting…

Part of our plan is to use some old school speed parts…

Here is a hint of our idea for the body.. Love the OG paint UNDER the rattle can gold…

As of now Aaron has stripped the interior and started cleaning things up. He also has been collecting some very cool parts!

We hope to have it on the road by spring.

Will keep you all posted.

Cool little car, good luck to you and your son. Being a father of two young boys, I can understand what a nice process this kind of project can be. Mine are 11 & 12yo and pretty soon we'll be doing something like this, too.

Years ago I had a '71 KG convertible but I think the earlier ones had cleaner body trim/design. Mine also had that "weird" automatic stick shift, when you moved the shifter slightly it engaged a clutch to allow shifting. Lucky for the car, when I gave up on it a very enthusiastic guy bought it and was all hopped up about restoring it.

Love the pics on GRM that show you removing the brown pant to reveal the original blue paint! So cool!

Cool car. Glad you liked our story. Much more to come as we finish the car and start to mod it.
