"The Whispering Bomb"

IIRC: That was his headline for the review of the BMW 2002 when it first hit the scene in 1969.

I loved his work at C/D. When he started Automobile, I felt he lost a little of his edge. He recently came back to C/D and he seemed to regain his sea legs.

He's one of the few fellows that cared whether a car had room for his hat.

He will be missed.

Sad news. I used to look forward to running into him at Monterey Media check in each year and then shopping at the Automobilia show afterward. Nice guy and prolific writer. He really liked cars an knew a ton. Lots of great conversations and debates. I feel lucky to have been able to spend time speaking with him over the years.

Many of us of a certain age owe a lot to him. His writing influenced me more towards cars that could go around a corner rather than plow thru it. I grew up in Southern Calif in the 60's and while most of my friends were into drag racing, Car & Driver (and to a lesser extent Road & Track and Sports Car Graphic) directed my interests towards road racing, F1, British, German and Italian cars.

But even David E. Davis couldn't get me to love French cars....

Thank you Sir. Godspeed.

Though I grew up in Nova Scotia, my story is similar. All my friends were into muscle cars whilst a buddy and I poured over C&D, R&T, MT, etc. I loved Davis' writing style. We learned a lot.

Rest In Peace. You will be missed.
