Octobers Classic & Sports Car (sorry-another car mag) has a couple of pictures/adds with Austin Healey 3000s blasting along on a rally stage. Dark green 911s and 356s, lite blue TR4s and that picture a reader posted of a rally 356 in a snow storm come close but a big Healeys on any rally stage just hits all the right buttons with me and I can look at those pictures for hours. Anyone else have a certain car (doesn't have to be rally/race) or a certain type of race/rally that sends them to car heaven?

I've got a bunch.

There's an old pic of an MGB at Sebring in 64 or 65. Rain was coming down in buckets, and the little MGB (with hardtop) was passing the much faster open cars.

A rally Lancia Stratos does it for me. Oh yeah.

Somewhere I have a pic of an Alpine A110 at the Copperstate Rally. Just sitting there, it was transcendently cool.

Those are just three off the top of my head.

Any image of the Mk I or MK II GT-40's at Lemans send me into a daze. Especially the gulf cars......mmmmmm

That and old Indianapolis cars from the 50's and early 60's on track, especially Yunick's capsule car. Crazy!

One of the 3 MGBs from the 64 Sebring race is on eBay now.

It's a really good thing I don't have a spare 100 grand laying around burning a hole in my pocket. Not sure how I'd explain that one to the wife.

The Tyrell (sp) P34 six wheel Elf from the late 70's. I love to see that car in race action shots.

The Triumph GT6 Mk 1 & 2 (OK, I admit bias) is another car I just love to look at. (Lucky for me!)

And it's crazy, but, I can watch in-car hot lap video on You Tube of any car at any road track.

a Volvo PV544 in a historic rally

a Volvo P1800 in a vintage race

(either one really gets me juiced-up and I don't even own a Volvo)

<a href="Dutch AH Racer">To see to vintage race cars dicing together, especially if they're Healeys and shooting a 2' flame from the exhaust....................that really turns my crank.

Most all of the above work for me (but when flames come out of the exhaust in my vintage racer, it's usually accompanied by pieces of piston rings)

But here's some others....

Even though I'm not a big rally fan (I ran two SCCA PRO-Rallys years ago....not my thing), I love seeing those cool big trucks that run in Paris-Dakar.

I've run in a number of night-endurance races in ~My Escort~ and it's sort of surreal. I love night shots of any endurance race car (this is LeMans).

The sidecar "hacks" at the Isle of man race always make for a great picture too.

Lately something has started to push my buttons--to the point where I have started searching the ads. We'll see if it pans out.

"Unlikely rally cars", great statement. Pictures of Jag saloons rallying on the Monte or being driven at British club races inspires/motavaites me when I autocross my Maxima. Something about big ole sedans doing well where they shouldn't. Sportscars rallying. Besides the big Healeys, Bugeye/Frogeyes, MGs, Truimphs, Fiats, Porsches, being flogged on a rally stage really "turns my crank". I could never bring myself to do that. What Keith did with his Miata at Targa Newfoundland was great.

Don't forget the original Mini, the mighty giant killer of the great rallys of the '60's.

I like pictures of cars that don't look like they belong there like MGs/Triumphs/Healeys/Miatas etc in a rally or a Volvo or Subaru station wagon in an autocross or road race. I always liked it when some one would run an old Chevy or Dodge wagon at the drag strip too.

How about something really unique. I took this shot at Goodwood a few years back. I can't remember the make, but my wife loved it. What a great beach party mobil.

Stupid question-can Outlaws only be 356 Coupes? I haven't seen that many different Outlaws before. With what 356s are worth I do not know if I would/could make one.

Yes and no. Dunno really. Some early hot rodders used the name. Gary Emory (iirc) used it for the custom 356s he built as well. I have seen hot rod 912s with that name too.

I guess its about what you like instead of period and correct (cw stuff).

I like to think of my little 914 as carrying on in that vein, albeit my progress is slow.

Here's a goog link for reference:

Here's one that was for sale not too long ago. IIRC, it's a 914-6 with a 356 body grafted to it. I consider it an outlaw.

If you click on the picture, you'll see the whole car and some of the other pix of it at my photobucket site.
