I have never liked the spitfire or MG bumpers after they switched to the huge plastic/rubber deals. However, I have found a 79 Spit that looks to be in great shape for a good price. Can the bumpers be replaced with earlier chrome ones? I know this is possible with the MGs but I haven't looked into doing it on a Spit.

Yes it is possible. You need the earlier bumpers (1971 and 1972 MkIVs look the cleanest). You will have to cut up the bumper mounting points and I do not know how this is done. Then you need the European version of the black bumper cover that mounts over that to hide the mounting point. You will likely have to source these from the UK and they tend to be fairly expensive for two pieces of plastic. You can use the US versions, but they are much bulkier. I do not know of a conversion kit that anybody makes for the Spitfire like the MGB one.

BTW I have an 80 model that I am going to do this to eventually.

Simply remove them. Spits look sooooo good with out them.

Evan, is that a Buell?

The rears are a straight bolt on swap.

The front you can just swap them on, but you'll have some interesting clearance problems with the big urethane pad mounts that are hung on the end of the frame rails.

Easiest semi-fix is to simply notch the back. You'll see what I mean when you see where the bumper tries to go. But this still leaves the big pad mount up in front of the bumper. Paint it black, put a piece of wood in it, etc.

Far more difficult fix is to grind the spot welds and remove the entire unit from the frame ends. Triumph production line seemed to go wild with a spot welder on those things, and a lot of grinding is involved.

It is a SV650 with Buell headlights and flyscreen.

Thanks for all the replies, I still haven't decided to pull the trigger on the car but knowing that the bumpers can be removed makes it more tempting.
