Watches

The topic of watches seemed to get some serious interest on the old message board, so just letting you know that we're officially starting a timepiece "bit" in the magazine. The plan is to showcase a watch each issue, and we'll keep it interesting and varied. (And for those of you who are not into watches, it's not going to take up that much real estate in the mag.)

On a related note, I'll be in Tokyo soon. I'd at least like to come home with another Seiko 5. We'll see how it goes.

As the one who started the watch thread over there, that sounds great. I got a watch case for Christmas and did the first offical watch count, from the junk ones to the Speedmaster I have 23.

Its funny to find out that you have an addiction and didn't even know it!

i got a fake Breitling for Bently for Christmas...you can't even tell that it is not real, except that it only cost $160.

The Breitlings are nice, and the quality of the fakes has gotten amazing. I almost bought a bought a Steel Fish in November.

I was just thinking I need to post about my first watch in 10 years.

I picked it up on Boxing Day for a nice price.

Was not sure if I would like wearing a watch after years of shunning them, but this one caught my eye.

Brushed metal look, so its not too flashy. Good for dress and casual wear.

No battery, awesome and clean face.

I have three Seiko Kinetic Auto Relay watches, a couple of old Benrus military watches, and about seven clocks out of old Soviet era fighters.

I guess I have a clock fetish as well, and didn't even realize it until just now. :)

My buddies tried to find some Russian gaugues on their last trip to Moscow, but no joy. Dealers were asking to way too much.

I was able to get mine while a friend was visiting somewhere over there. He got five for ten dollars. New in box, so I had to buy a couple from him. The others I got on ebay for about twenty each.

Now I see they are costing quite a bit. I guess capitalism is taking a firm hold over there.

Okay, a question about watches. Do you guys prefer ones that are somehow related to cars or not? For example, which is more interesting, a Rolex Daytona or Oris WilliamsF1 or just a cool old Spaceview or whatever?

I tend to gravitate towards aviator style watches. I haven't found any that I really like that I would associate with cars. I prefer leather bands over metal. I had a Benrus that I really liked that "disappeared" in airport security, recently. Somewhere I have a Hamilton automatic from the '60s that I inherited from my grandfather. I apparently did a good job of hiding it so I wouldn't lose it. I bought a couple of watches to replace the Benrus which means inexpensive enough to wear to work, but interesting enough to get questioned about. Both are automatics and work great as long as I wear them enough to keep them wound. -Louis-

Funny, I'm wearing a Slava right now, too.

When I ran machines for a living I always wore pocket watches; it kept the moving parts from yanking your arm into a machine. Cheapie Caravelle worked for me, about 3/16" thick and except for the light chain you wouldn't even know it was there.

My wife got me a nice Waltham pocket watch for Christmas one year thinking this was a good thing. It was heavy and 3/4" thick and just too nice for work; engraving on the back indicated it was made in 1894. I'll try to get a photo up.

I'd like to have a automotive inspired watch.Right now, I have the Longines that my Father gave me, as well as a Waltham pocket watch that belonged to my Great-Grandfather. I received it when my Son was born. It will be passed down to him when his son is born.I believe that it dates to 1869. I looked it up online, but I forgot the exact year.

I almost didn't buy the Slava. I was looking for a skeleton and the Orion filled that order. I just think it's cool seeing all the parts do their thing. The Slava, on the other hand, just happened to catch my eye. I wasn't looking for it. I didn't buy it the same time as the Orion, but came back later and the vendor still had it. Not sure what it is about it that made me want it. It just has an interesting old-school look and a ripple effect on the face (that's hard to see in the pictures) that made it stand out in my mind. I have a few watches with clear backs, and I always thought that was a cool feature. It's neat seeing how the pieces work. I think I have a skelton Swatch somewhere, too.

My Slava has kept excellent time. It took some Googling to figure out how to set the date, but that was it. I have noticed a bunch of Slavas on eBay, too. I'm watching a few right now. We'll see.

I've been carrying a Bill Blass pocket watch that my daughters got me for several years now. Wish it had a calender in it though, now use my cell phone for that. I have an old Seiko that has both analog and digital display that needs cleaning and a battery. Also inherited several from my dad including his fathers early 50's vintage Rolex. His dad was a RR switchman so accurate time peices was a necessity. Others include a Bulova, Orion and a few others. Dad liked to collect watches. One of dad's is a self winding type and he used to joke that a good vacation meant that the self-winding watch would quit. I'm not one for any type of jewelry and don't wear rings (including wedding) or watches so the pocket watch is perfect. Daughters got me the pocket watch because I carried a wrist watch (a military cloth band Timex cheapy) in my pocket.

I like watches but I won't spend real money on them. I'd like to buy a used Tudor in the future, something very simple and timeless. I'm watchless right now as my old Swiss Army fell off my wrist and broke on the pavement! I'm thinking about a fake Bell & Ross. I'm not above a fake, especially something like this. Its really more aeronautical, but it still evokes something of the automobile.

I personally prefer an automotive connection but can appreciate most watches especially if there's a cool story tied to it.

Cool! Now I won't have to cringe and occasionally buy one of those overpriced watch magazines to get my fix.

Oh, and by the way, thanks, thanks A LOT, just what I needed, my watch hobby to be re-awakened. Well, at least they don't take up as much space as cars.
