Has anybody ever changed lower ball joints on an '05 dakota? I have a friend at work who asked me to take a look at/change the ones on his truck and it looked like they had a big split ring on top of it. Are they just pressed in and the ring is just in case it works loose?
Yes they are pressed in the lower control arm, 2 or 4WD ? Not that bad of a job over all but they can fight like hell some times. Good luck.

I have done ball joints before, but had never seen ones with clips on them.
Just take the snap ring off (or grind the the shoulder off) bang out the old unit and press in the new unit. FYI the 2WD upper ball joints can be a REAL PIA, as they are inside the upper control arm and can become rusted in place.
