It has fuel and spark and cranks over.

I went to start the car and it cranked over and seemed to catch. Let go of the key and it didn't start. Went to restart and now it just cranks over.

Any advice appreciated! My plans for the night are scrapped now unfortunately :( Thanks!

My GF's Sentra did that recently. As unlikely as it sounds, it was flooded. What I suspect happened on the Sentra is that the oil was low (and it was) and the oil pressure cutout got triggered during a cold start during cranking. This in turn led to all that extra gas (cold start, remember) got stuck unburned in the cylinders. Continued cranking only made the problem worse.

I pulled the plugs to check that each one was firing and the tips were soaked in gas. I added oil, dried off the plugs, cranked the engine for about 15 seconds to dry out the cylinders, and replaced the plugs. Fired right up and it's been fine ever since.

Oil is fine. I had just checked it.

As for checking the plugs, the tech who replaced the head on the engine last summer, over torqued the coil packs. I broke one tab just trying to pull the coil to check for spark. Fortunately JB weld to the rescue!

Thanks. I'll check the plugs and see if they look wet.

Jeff,

THANK YOU!!!!

I pulled the plugs and they were very wet. Dried them off, let the cylinders air out a bit, and the car fired up.

I should have known better. Oh well. Thanks again!
