I am a fan of the Vibe/ Matrix. A bit roomier inside than a Fit, but not much of a mileage penalty. Anyway, the difference between 35 mpg and 40 is tiny.
Finding one with a Manuel trans may be tricky, but not impossible.
Also, I have to admit, I did not follow my own advice, and recently upgraded my $800 daily driver with a $2200 Volvo 240 wagon. 
Which I would also recommend to Tuna, except he had a bad 940 wagon experience.

Some jerk put up a craiglist ad for a cherry looking 1987 manual hatchback accord for $1450 and i called immediately. Turns out it wasnt a pic of the real car and the guy had decided to hang onto it for a while longer anyway.
Talk about a letdown! I need another car like a hole in the head, but that guy ruined my day.
