I don't hate Audis. Like I said, very pretty, and VAG in general has my favorite interiors. They just seem to have more than their fair share of headaches.

I drove a rental one of those. Not a bad little car. The A/C controls are a little strange and it is a little small for my tast but over all I was impressed. For a bargain basement car it drove nicely, the ride wasn't bad and the little engine didn't mind too much when you buried you foot in it. The wife and I discussed getting her one when her van dies.
Not bad. I spent a weekend with one. It sat a little tall for my taste, but was comfy enough, and that Toyota 1.8 / 6 speed combination was quite willing.

having worked on BMWs professionally and (unfortunately) had to work on a couple good customer's audis, i'm amazed they both come from the same country. i actually quite like driving the fast ones (RS4=awesome) but when a boring a6 requires removal of practically the whole front end to get at the timing belt... yuck. i wouldnt want to own a modern one.
Drop the AWD and you're looking at a Mazda 3 hatchback. Drop the 30 MPG and you're looking at a Subaru of some sort. Can't have both, I'm afraid.

I also love the inside of a vag, and I agree with you about the headaches associated with them.

That's interesting, the BMW is much easier to work on the Audi? Is BMW much better with reqards to quality? Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, a buddy of mine had a relatively late model 3 series car and he complained about it all the time, how much it cost to get things "fixed" at the dealer when they didn't fix much of anything. His problems related to the air conditioning and brakes. He said BMW wanted to charge him an arm and a leg to install new brakes, something to the effect that they wanted to add new calipers instead of just adding the pads. He ended up going to some shadetree mechanic down the street and the job was relatively cheap. I've always liked BMW's, Audi's and Mercedes but everyone from one source or another seems to have definite, negative opinions about maintenance.
I don't want an Audi or a BMW. Thanks anyway.
I think you need a Civic Rt 4wd Wagon.

ZX5/SVT, Mazda3, Honda Fit, Protege5,Impreza would be my picks if you couldn't find a sweet RT Civic.

well they all have their stupid 'wtf were they thinking' areas, but from my experience (admittedly limited to basically pre05 models) the BMWs strike me as significantly more thought out when it comes to removing and servicing common wear items.
that's just a dealer wanting 140/hr+ along with dealer markup and overselling likely non-essential repair parts on a simple brake job as you saw since the indie shop did it for significantly less. though who knows what parts they used. the indie shop i worked at used either original bmw parts or real german oe type parts, usually less than dealers, but also known good quality. some indie shops use whatever local parts supplier carries and thus could end up with a WAY cheaper and depending on the quality, inferior job.
