Six figure purchase price, plus maintenance, plus insurance/title/plates for a car that gets driven 5k miles/year seems crazy to me. I saw a handful of Macs a couple of weeks back, and they're striking but that must be a hell of a car! Obviously the fact that I'm thinking about value proves that I'm not the intended customer though.

In reply to STM317:

Well value vs cost is two different things. A properly tuned Mac (software updates, 19" wheels on all 4 corners and 11" front tires) and a decent driver can beat all but about a dozen street cars in the world.

Just depends on what you want to do.

I predict the 2012 12C coupe will get below $100k next year when they release the P14. The 650/675 is just a body refresh and a tune on the 12c. The P14 is supposed to be an actual new car.

650S will be sub 100K on a good car in about 12 month IMO. It's not cheap but its a hell of a deal for the performance and semi livability that you get in that package.

In terms of cost say 100K car for 3 years and you pay cash then sell.

In California
8750$ in purchase tax
12000$ in lost investment potential.
4000$ for insurance
3000$ in registration fee.
?Depreciation/ Repair and Gas.

So 27K out the door just to have it sit in your garage minus depreciation. Or about 770$ a month. Depends on where you sit. Lets say 1K a month, that is not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things for some people. Plus I get 1K a month out of enjoyment from the car.

The guys I don't get are the one's in my income bracket who go off and get say a 458 New and watch it drop 120K in value in 3 years just in depreciation. I like my cars mostly depreciated thank you very much.

Yeah, there are some guys on the McLaren board that are just itching to buy a P14. Depreciation and all.

I think the 12C will be a collector's item IF McLaren makes it as a manufacturer.

650S at $100k in 12 months? That is aggressive. You are gonna have to share some links to where you are pricing out theses steals.

Here the cheapest 650S is around $180k.

I hate doing the math on cars I don't drive much.

I stand by that number but only if the P14 is as good as people are making it. A 650S with say 30K miles and a good history you should be able to get one there or maybe 10% more.

mazdeuce don't do the math ever. I want to say that I am in the 3.50$ a mile range on the Viper with everything including depreciation. But say 6K a year is not a lot to me personally. Almost all of loss though is from taxes, which I can write off, and theoretical market gains though and I can live with that.

Again it a percentage thing. 1-2% a year of income going to a physical thing that brings you great joy to me is worth it. It does slow down my FIRE goals but life is about enjoying things you like as well as preparing for the future. If it was like 10-20% like some people do when they get there stretch then I would not be doing it. But I am a cheap ass and I have zero responsibilities to anyone or anything but the wife and she makes good money as well.

Indeed, the desire to have the new hotness at any cost baffles me.

Hey Weary maybe you know about this but I have been seeing some outrages loan terms on some of these cars.

Like 12 years! How in the hell do you finance a car for twelve years?

The rates are funny. Porsche gave (at least some) 918 buyers 1% on nearly a million dollars. Even the guys who can afford to write a check would be silly not to take that.
And that 1-2% vs. 10-20%. 2% of a $10k a month is only $200 and $10k a month take home is a LOT for most people. To do $2k thst's $100k a month. Is that really the income bracket supercar owners are playing in?

I noticed Cats Exotics advertised 5% for 12 years recently. I wouldn't do it, but apparently it's a pretty popular option. Then again I know of some people that finance an RV like a house and those RVs have horrible depreciation.

$100k on 12 years at 5% is $925 a month. That means you are giving away about $30k in interest.

That's alot but it puts you in your dream car and if you have $925 a month in disposable income. Who am I to judge?

I wouldn't judge them either. When I bought my first 911 I had to scrape together the down payment and it was a sacrifice for sure. Grilled cheeses for dinner and cheap beer, but I was young and didn't have a lot of money. I couldn't have been happier though because I had just scored one of my dreams cars. Almost two decades later I still have it, along with a lot of other cars, and I'm very happy I made that sacrifice back then.
