This is my first post on this forum, so bear with me please.

I'm looking drooling over a 1965 imperial Crown sedan on craigslist, for a daily,  and would like to know what you all think of rallycrossing it until I buy/build a rally car, probably NASA rally open 2wd light (hopefully a 30ish ford with 3 850cc snowmobile engines, brinn 2 speed, quick change rear end, mx5 front suspension and steering, if I can afford it, a chevette, e30, 1st gen neon, etc if I can't).

anyway I'm wondering if I should rallycross it and if I do decide to what easy improvements I can make, tires, suspension, etc.

A rallycross Imperial? A stage rally '30s Ford with multiple snowmobile engines and Miata suspension? You are our kind of insane.

Thank's for the complement, like Waylon said, I've always been cravy. now I'm looking at a 61 imperial, for the fins, plus imagine this sliding around in the dirt.  1

For Rallycross, do not use steel wheels, you will tear the centers out of them, especially on a car that heavy.

That's a very LARGE car for rallycross, longer and more heavy than many 1/2 trucks, Rallycross leans more towards small nibble cars.  I doubt its ability to turn corners very well.  It might be an exercise in frustration, it could be fun though too.

Thanks again, NickD for the advice.

I do realize that it is a bit large for rallyx, but Iam planning on a smaller car once I sell my volvo 740.

Tuck some 31/10.5 tires under it and have at it!

That would be terrible for rallycross, you should definitely do it.

A pal of mine rallycrossed his S600 and scored himself Extra Special Bonus Points if he sucessfully knocked down both the inside and outside cones at the same time. I bet that finned wonder there would do that trick just as well...

this vintage of imperials have 30's from the factory, so I can fit some pretty meaty tires under it.

should I run mud terrains or snow tires? keep in mind that this will also be my daily, I have tire chains, and here in ND there are a lot of muddy dirt roads.

Is anyone else excited to see Miata suspension under a vintage hot rod? I'm not sure how this will work, but I really want to see it happen.

also, 3 Snowmobile engines! Where have you been all of our lives?

I think it would be a waste of a good car, but those old Imperials were built like tanks - there was a reason they were banned from demolition derbies.

yeah the snowmobile engines I'm thinking about using are really trick, lets hope I can afford it. plus the 2 speed only weighs 45 bs, I think i can build this thing under 1200 lbs.

as to where I've been: hooning cars, washing dishes, and working on robots in Rockford Il. I moved up to Williston ND when I got out of high school in October and now I'm making enough to race.

It probably would not physically fit through the gates on most courses.

I have been on courses with my RX-7 where I was driving on the cones on both sides.

This sounds like a hilarious idea. Will it be fast? Maybe not. Will it be fun? I bet it will.

Bring the event organizers some donuts or something, maybe you can bribe them to widen the gates a few inches. laugh

I've had evil ideas for a Track T roadster body dropped on a Miata rollerskate, maybe dress the 1.6L up as some sort of never-was DOHC-converted Model A engine screaming through ITBs and a lake pipe.

Whooooaaaaa, that V4 is one bad unit. I want one in the back of an X1/9 (or the front of a Saab Sonnett!). Thank you for opening my eyes to that thing.
