I have a pretty clean 1987 Mazda RX7 GXL that was an automatic car.

It has been converted to a manual car (except the rear diff is still the 3.90).

Exterior: The car is in decent shape with okay paint (some minor peeling on front bumper and some other slight scratches etc.
Mustang GT 17" wheels

No RUST!

Interior: Complete and everything except A/C and power steering work (neither are installed)

Mods: Tokiko blues or KYB adjustable shocks and coilover springs Hawk pads full set of ST bushings included

The weird part: The car does not have a motor or trans in it right now. I have 2 choices. The goal here is to sell the car with the best profit. A running driving car is worth more than one that is not.

Option # 1: I have an S5 engine and trans I could put in this weekend. I would use all of the S4 pieces on the S5 in order to make it look stock.

The car would owe me about $2200 if I went this way.

Option # 2: Rebuild / replace the turbo engine that I had in the car with a used one. This option is the most expensive. Assume 700$ for a known good turbo engine. That also means I am giving up all of the turbo electronics (ecu, harness, sensors, etc...), trans, driveshaft, etc. This stuff cost me about $1000 to put together.

In other words, the car would need to repay me about $3200 for the turbo option to be worthwhile to me.

Any idea on which way I should go?

Thanks for the input!

I bought a running/driving 87 GXL with basically no rust for $2k. Similar list of mods too.

My gut says that the best way to make money is to put the car together in the simplest, cheapest configuration that works. I would put the S5 in it and hang onto or sell the turbo parts separately.

In reply to DaveEstey:

Yeah, that's about what I would expect to pay for a fair one too.

I think you can expect $2500-$3000 from the right buyer if it is really a zero rust car with the S5 engine in there.
