So my friend/ used car dealer (wait that doesn't sound right?) has a '90 944 s2 convertible for sale. At first I said no way but full maintenance history and no winters have changed my mind. Problem is I would have to sell/trade the LX 5.0L - not sure if I'm ready to do that. I could sell the beater Civic but having 2 summer cars in Canada doesn't work, aka winter. What do you think? Has a backseat that might fit my daughter...
I had a triple blue one back in 99, I loved it. The rear seats are small but will be fine for a kid, they still drive like a 944 and seemed as stiff as any hardtop 944 I've owned.
Those are rare and desirable. Buy it and enjoy it. I'm sure that there is a PCA member who will be ready to take it off your hands when you're done with it.
Is it a 944 S2 or a 968? Both are pretty rare.

I'm going to look again tomorrow but pretty sure it's a 944 s2. Thanks for the replies.
Those are getting less and less common. It is basicly the top of the line / evolution of the 944. ALthough the 968 is considered part of the 944 family much of those cars are unique to 968's where are the s2 is still a 944 just the best of the best 944. If it is an M030 car dont walk run and get it. Those are even more rare and it will do nothing but appreciate in value at this point as long as you keep it in good service.
Biased opinion here but agree that you should strongly consider it. 1990 would be a 944S2, 968 didn't bow until 1992. S2 is a twin cam, 16 valve 3.0L with 208 hp and 207 lb/ft of torque, giving almost Turbo performance without the lag or finicky nature of the Turbo. Fun, check - I regularly exercise her on the mountain roads around western NC and have had her on track at VIR and Road Atlanta with spirited touring laps, lots of smiles/gallon. Rare, yes - only 1824 1990 and 562 1991 cab's were imported, and they seem to have hit the bottom of the depreciation curve as I've seen movement upward in value since purchasing 4 years ago. If you pull the trigger, two pieces of advice specific to these cars (in addition to the usual 944 stuff like timing belt/water pump): have the cam chain tensioner pads replaced immediately if you don't have records of it being done. They're plastic, get brittle over time and a failure can destroy the head. Second, consider disabling the power top mechanism - if it gets out of alignment it can snap the main bows, which are apparently made out of unobtainium and impossible to find. Good luck and enjoy!
I go to a lot of Porsche Club events and I haven't seen a 944S2 Cabrio in a few years.
I say go for it. It is probably better in almost every way to the LX 5.0 it would replace.
Alright, you've convinced me to take a closer look. Going to test drive it tomorrow. From what I understand the flip up lights are still available but I don't mind the look of the fixed ones. Car has been repainted and shows 67000 miles (American car).
Here's some pics from the dealership:

If its from america then your good everything from murica is better. didnt you know that?
After doing a little recon this afternoon I've discovered a few issues. 1. Repaint looks sketchy and looks like a possible accident repair.
2. These 'service records' are more word of mouth than written documents 3. Looks like some cheap additions, aka tires and lights are there as an afterthought. I'm going to keep the Mustang and deal with it's terrible handling, winter project here I come.
Thanks for all your help. Next up for me is replacing my daily driver...
My friend the 'car dealer' even said he wasn't sure enough that he didn't drive it home, top down, last night.
What are they asking for it?
Too bad. It really sounded interesting at first. That could have been a nice find.

There was talk of $5500 but I doubt I could get it for that. I could overlook some things but the lack of maintenance records scares me.

That's how I'm feeling...
The big one for me would be the accicent damage. Everything else on them is easlily fixable and you would more than likley be doing it anyway.

I've not seen a cabrio that cheap in a while. I gave 6200 for mine with a sliced top and nose damage (58k on it) and sold it on eBay for 10,500 a year later.

Take into account my numbers are from 99, look wound and they aren't cheap in any condition.
In reply to chandlerGTi:
Car sold today, not to me. Now I'm looking for 944's on Kijiji ...
Here's one on my local CL. http://knoxville.craigslist.org/cto/4511183704.html
