So lets say you found a 1992 N/A MR2 with a bad engine, and lets just say that the price is below $1000 for what appears to be a rust free car with a 5 speed.

how much is involved with a a motor swap to a the 2.0 turbo? Computer and engine and turbo and exhaust, what else?

I am riding my bicycle to look at it at lunch (it is parked at the CarX right by my work)

There was a thread on here stating that the hot swap for that car would be a V6 from a Camry. I think NA power in that car would be very, very nice...

As long as you get the clip from another MR2 Turbo, and it's the same generation, cake. Weekend job.

Now.... here's my thinking. Why?

Spend the extra time (and possibly money) and grab a Gen3 3sgte motor. (540cc injectors, better turbo, w2a intercooler, map based "happy" motor). It makes more power, has WAY more top end, and just generally runs better. The Toyota AFM is infuriating on the Gen2 3sgte.

As for the V6, you've got a few options. 1mzfe (3.0 litre) and 3mzfe (3.3 litre) swaps abound. The older 5vzfe/3vzfe has been done as well, but i wouldn't bother with those unless you wanted to boost and shoot for 600+whp later.

The killer swap is the 2grfe/2grfse. 3.5 litre V6 out of the new Camry. Gobs of power. Everywhere. There's a couple REALLY good write ups on this swap on mr2oc.com.

Personally, if it were me, i'd do a gen2 3sgte, and convert to Gen3 electronics later. Cheap initial investment, minimal headaches.

OK I just went and looked at it. It is RUST free, it looks brand new. Leather interior, etc...

I have eamailed the guy, I hope I have not been scooped on the deal as the ad on craigslist is from 5:30 AM today.

My NA 1992 MR2 pulled hard in every gear. I loved the car and truly wish I had never sold it.

Sometimes that motor will, sometimes it doesn't. For some reason, the 5sfe in particular is very subject to having random "freak" motors, and some absolute dogs.

My old 93 Celica had one of those freak motors. 15.9 quarter mile, and had no problems banging rev limiter in any gear, which is very surprising for a motor that isn't supposed to have any power above 5k.

My current 92 Celica has a turd of a 5sfe. I haven't run it at the quarter, but i'd be surprised if it broke into the 16s.

A good one is very entertaining, if not fast. A bad one will make you hate the car with a passion. However, having it in a good car, aka SW20 will make up for a lot.
