So I killed the 3-4 clutches in the 1996 Tahoe I use for towing the racecar. I have a 1995 Tahoe I can get the tranny from with minimal trouble. Both use the 4L60E
What would I need to change on the 1995 tranny to work correctly in the 1996 truck (this is also the GenIII-Vortec switchover year FWIW) If it's relatively easy I will swap it over and rebuild the 96 box at my leisure.
I should just get it pro-rebuilt, but nobody (reliable) locally will use my spec of parts in their rebuild, and at $1800+ for the job dammit I want good stuff in there!
how viable is that option?
For my year I would need a standalone transmission computer to run the 80... 98-up just need a wiring adapter you can but aftermarket along with a transfer case adapter.
A 4l65 is a more viable option... Which just amounts to a beefed rebuilt 4l60 anyway. $$
same engine family, so if the electrical plugs are the same then they are interchangeable.
minor correction:every truck engine since the mid 80's some time was known as a "vortec", which is a word made up by the GM marketing team that meant "truck engine".. the 96 Vortec wasn't the "genIII" small block- those didn't come out until 97 in the Vettes, 98 in the F bodies, and 99 in the trucks.. it's just a Gen1 with better heads and a screwball efi setup.. the 92-97 LT1/LT4/L99 in Vettes, F bodies, and A bodies was what became known as the "GenII" at some point in time..

Yeah, I was gonna say, I thought the truck 350 was the last of the production vehicle gen 1 small block chevy V8s. The trucks went straight from dinosaur stuff to LS based starting around 99 as the GMT-800 was gradually introduced.
