Okay, so I just bought my first VW not even a month ago, and it's been nothing but troubles. The latest problem, I need some help diagnosing. For a couple days now, ONLY IN THE MORNING (Weird I know) my car gets stuck in the first gear I put it in. One morning it was stuck in reverse, and yesterday it was stuck in third, the shifter will not budge no matter how hard i push, pull or tug, it would not budge. But the past two days when I went home on my lunch break (when it's sunny and warm) the car runs fine. So this morning it did the same thing, and got stuck in reverse, so I thought, alright I'll let it warm up, and as I was letting it warm up, while my foot was holding the clutch in the RPM's started to drop and the car stalled. Every time I restarted it, it would stall. Also, I don't know if I just never noticed this before or not, but the odometer blinks IN 02 when ever it starts and then goes back to the mileage. I think I just need to replace or adjust my clutch, but as I've never dealt with a VW before, I'm not positive. Any feedback on what could be wrong with my car would be greatly appreciated. Also, how much more difficult is it to change a clutch in a 6 cylinder engine, as opposed to a 4 cylinder?

There's no GLS model with a VR6 in 95, so I'll assume you have a 95 GLX with that motor and the things that go with it.

Generally, clutch and gear selection problems are not temperature dependent at all. At least in my experience. What happens if you let the car warm up in neutral and then try things out? How do you get it out of gear normally, let it warm up?

The rpms dropping is most likely either a hydraulic leak, or the clutch master or slave cylinder going out. The first initial hit of pressure is enough to release the clutch, but it can't sustain it and it reengages.

As far as the cold/hot deal, a draining of the transmission fluid and replacement with a quality synthetic could fix it, assuming it's an internal problem. I have used Redline MTL as well as GM Syncromesh before with good results. Though more likely the linkage is just out of adjustment (but this wouldn't be temp dependent).

There is no adjustment for the clutch on these cars, it either works or doesn't. If it doesn't, there's a bad part.
