Sitting on a reputable mechanics lot. Been there to long. Very Clean inside and out, 106,000 miles. New timing belt, fresh service. Not an SH so insurance isn't crazy. How many hard earned dollar is it worth? How many miles will it go before cratering
Its worth no more than 2k, duh.
What options? Id pay more for a non sunroof model, and even more for a third pedal.

Sad to say, those things are worth some bucks. Its hard to find a nice one for under $5k.
If you can talk him into thinking it's worth $2k, definitely buy it. LOL
I sold a 2001 integra GS for $6200 last year if that tells you anything about honda resale
Also bought a honda with 288k on it for $3800. lol.

He doesn't understand why . The car looks like Mr.Rodgers owned it, Not riced out or banged up, interior is clean, fair tires and all around a great looking used car. Price may be a little high for a 12 year old car but not Ridiculous according to NADA book value, he is under retail.
$4000-$5000 easy I would think...around Ohio anyway where rust destroys. Does it have the auto-stick? If it did, those were bad and many need replaced. If its a stick, I would consider making an offer if you could get a good deal. I posted about these before and most people thought they were too heavy, for track racing anyway. My brother had a 1999 and it was fun. We drove it 5 hours once and it killed my back though. I'm considering one in the future, but would rather have a hatchback. Anyway, keep your eye on it. I've seen many advertised with close to or over 200,000 miles. Pass if it is an autostick.
Yep Autostick. So this transmission has issues at what mileage?
I had a buddy who owned a si, it was fun as hell. If it was "too heavy", i couldnt tell. I could see the seats being a bit uncomfortable for long trips though. If I had the opportunity to pick one up, I would probably jump, but I would want the history on it. If it was an orphan on a shops doorstep, and the shop did work on it, Id want the shop to go through it for me. Also make very sure the shop has the right to sell it. Definitely do your homework on the title making sure there are no liens or other problems that would prevent a clear title transer to you.

I'm not sure about when they go. I've done alot research in the past on different boards and can only remember hearing bad news. I just looked at one on CL and the seller said it had a new auto tranny ($4000) put in from previous owner. My brother's Prelude had one and had no problem, but it had under 100,000 when he sold it. I would consider that before buying. Do some research. I always thought they were one of the best looking Honda's.
Shop owner also sells used cars as a supplement to repair business. Very good reputation. Car looks good but basically a supermodel with herpes ?
"Too Heavy" is in the context of when such statements are made.
The Del Sol was "too heavy" because it was heavier than the CRX, but compared to today's cars, it's a tossable lightweight.
So some research shows there were transmission problems on some models but I don,t speak enough Hondese to decipher if this is one of the models. any help?

They were around 3,000 lbs in 1999. I was trying to get more info off this board about them a few months ago and had a few comments about the weight. With prices under $5000 and some under $4000 or $3000, I still don't know why they don't get as much attention.

I might dig in to some research because now you've got me thinking about one again...thanks
Has anyone figured out a cure for the transmission or did the engineer have to HariKari for failing in a spectacular fashion?

If its been sitting there long enough for him to want to get rid of it at a relative bargain, maybe there's enough room for a manual swap?
I've always liked those cars. I think the weight thing is blown out of proportion, especially for a street car. The torque they have over an integra makes it a better daily driver imho.

Yeh, after the time i spent in that integra i mentioned above, i cant help but think that the prelude has to be a way more rewarding daily driver kinda thing.
I really like the last gen prelude styling and would certainly try to buy one if they were cheaper. Even an auto..

Yeah--hardcore Honda guys tend to think that any Honda over 2200lbs is "heavy".
Take the weight think with a grain of salt. A torquey 160hp is still going to be amusing in that car--but too bad it wasn't H22A.

Actually, that car did have the H22A in it. It was rated 5hp less than the stick model for who knows what reason. I loved my 2000 Prelude, but mine was a manual, so I can't comment on the longevity (or lack thereof) of the auto trans. Mine used a bit of oil - apparently according to the Prelude forums I was on at the time, that was a fairly common thing. It was a great DD though - replaced only because I needed four doors.
The auto's can have problems with their transmissions even though the fluid has been changed, honda started getting it right after 98 though. Take it for a drive around the block, see if it slips, if it does pass on it unless the deal is incredible. The transmissions take more crap then the other honda auto's though.
I like the preludes I've been contemplating droping a lude H23 motor in my integra for awhile now.
I now have a 1994 accord that has been pretty indestructable. 250,000 hard miles and the transmission still shifts like it has a kit in it. The Prelude is a great looking car but this transmission thing gives me the heebyjeebys. I hav'nt seen anyone that will offer that these transmissions can be successfully repaired yet.
They can be repaired, part of the honda downfall though is that there is no replaceable filter without taking the transmission apart. Really the only parts that really die are the shift solenoids, but that is because of the internal plates/fluid getting old and clogging up the noids. If you need a replacement transmission, the junk yards usually want an arm and a leg, as do the rebuild companies. I've found cheap replacements from JDM importers, found a transmission for my auto integra for $100 picked up, similar deals for lude transmissions.

I scanned really quick through this. I thought it may be helpful. I just e-mailed about a black 1997 with a 5-speed. Man, the more I look at these, the more I like them. Can you believe its been a decade since they made these? Not comfortable on long trips though.
Thanks for the info Fletch1. I have to pass this damn thing twice a day and its hard to resist. Wish it had a 5 speed!
for some the reason the front of a 5th gen reminds me something of a '60s Ferrari. Not sure why. I've always wanted one for that reason
