An '06 would have the 3.2 VR6, it wasn't until '07 that it got the 3.6 engine. I'd guess 250 hp shoving around nearly 5000 lbs won't get you run over on the merge lanes but won't win any drag races either.
I don't think I'd want to buy a modern Porsche with that power/weight ratio. If I'm paying P-car money, it better have some scoot.

The one thing that draws me towards the VR6 Cayenne is it was available with a 6 spd manual. The only way to get that with the V8 is to splurge for the GTS version.

Fine by me. I prefer an auto in a big-ish luxo SUV.

I prefer no German automatic in anything.
Cayenne VR6 = intersection of VR6 timing chain issues and Porsche owner deferred maintenance.
Our Porsche contact HATES these things. The dealership salesmen tell prospective owners that they only need to be serviced every 20k. Then when the engine goes TU at 60k, well, it's out of warranty, shut up and buy another one.

Going to look at a 2005 Touareg V6 today with only 85k on the clock.
Bad idea?

FYI the FX45 can't really tow anything useful (like a race trailer). Only 3500 lbs capacity.
The Cayenne pulls 7700 lbs (even in 6-cylinder trim) and the Trailblazer SS does 6600.
I've gone the TBSS route, and if you don't mind burning through some gas it is a fun way to go. I ended up getting rid of mine as I couldn't bear idling away $ in traffic at such a high rate anymore.
That being said, even seeing the Cayenne S prices tempts me back in to the fray. As said above, must be the GRM effect.
